WHAT TO DO ON A PHOTOGRAPHY HOLIDAY

Wildlife

Perfect for anyone who’s ever swooned over an Attenborough documentary; travelling in the company of a specialist wildlife photographer will ensure you actually get photos of dolphins (not splashes) and monkeys (not leaves). Trips range from the classic – following the Big Five across the African savannah, to the elusive – tracking endangered tigers in the jungles of India. Think about the creatures and the landscapes which interest you most; special interest species include wolverines in Finland, orangutans in Borneo, orcas off the coast of Iceland and pandas in their Chinese homeland. If you’re finding it hard to choose a particular species, a trip to Africa or the Amazon opens up a huge range of wildlife – including reptiles and insects, which can shift from creepy to cool when captured close-up.

Sailing

A photography holiday aboard a sailboat does more than just “sound cool”. Boats take you to hidden coves, open seascapes and remote islets, while the peaceful vessel gets you up close to bird and seal colonies without scaring off the wild residents. Keep an eye out for passing dolphins, porpoises and whales – one of the most challenging yet rewarding photography subjects!

Walking

Walking doesn’t whizz you through the wonderful scenery, it allows you to admire the views with every step – mentally framing them, and setting up your shots as you go. You’ll get a feel, literally, for the landscapes, as you observe the terrain underfoot, savour the scent of the wildflowers, feel the breeze and notice details such as a flitting butterfly, or the light bathing a mountainside.

Culture

Photographing people on your travels requires two very different skills: technical know-how and being confident enough to approach your subject and make them comfortable in front of the lens. This type of holiday is perfect for all those frustrated photographers, who spot National Geographic covers-in-the-making every time they visit a market – yet don’t quite know how to make them happen. Visits to markets and festivals are common, but your holiday may also incorporate unique subjects such as whirling dervishes, Burmese artisans at work, Berber villages, Chinese farmers or remote Indian tribes – all in a respectful, unobtrusive way.
Nathan Horton, from our supplier Nathan Horton Photography, teaches his guests how to break down cultural barriers: “I can’t tell you how many people come to Cambodia just thinking about photographing Angkor Wat – but nearly everybody goes away having a really good sense of how friendly the people are, and having a good feeling about how interactive they’ve become with the camera. There’s a huge difference between the pictures people take when they first arrive and when they leave. The real difference is seeing people’s confidence grow as they actually engage with people. Cambodia lends itself to that perfectly because the people are genuinely very open, friendly, and engaging.”
