Western Australia cycling

Due to the sheer scale of the state, cycle touring and mountain biking in Western Australia is best enjoyed when focussed on specific cities, towns, regions or stretches of coastline.

The WA capital itself has some excellent bike trails including Kings Park with its spectacular views over the city centre as well as a number of imaginative and rewarding trails linking the city centre with Fremantle, the Swan River Valley and the Darling Range Hills.

Car-free Rottnest Island in the Indian Ocean just a short ferry ride from Perth is famous for its beautiful coves and beaches. Other attractions include Wadjemup Lighthouse; the Oliver Hill gun emplacements and tunnels built by the army prior to WW2; and the museum, built in 1857. The best way to explore the island is on foot or on bicycle with a fleet of over 300 bikes available that can be wheeled away from the jetty the moment your ferry arrives. Beyond Perth, the south west region with its rugged coastline, lush, rolling hills, river valleys and forests offer magical landscapes and a temperate climate. The Margaret River region in particular has an excellent network of trails and back roads linking its famous wineries with its world-class surf beaches. Further inland, the town of Pemberton has some superb trails through the surrounding karri and jarrah forests.

The Munda Biddi Bike Trail is an off road cycle trail traversing vast areas of unspoilt bushland, where you can discover an abundance of unique plants and wildlife. Learn about Aboriginal culture and the rich heritage of the region as you visit the attractions of the South West, or just stick to the trail and enjoy nature at its best.

A number of local government authorities throughout Western Australia have also developed a network of Heritage Cycling Trails linking places of historical interest.
