I went to Calcutta which is raw and real. There is no pretentiousness, no pretence, just India how you might have imagined.

I volunteered for a charity that empowered women - very much needed in many parts if India.

Although we did have extra days booked through our tour operator, a day trip to Agra to see the sights including the Taj Mahal, 2 day stay and safaris at the Corbett National Park and a stay in Naini Tal which were all wonderful the main part of the holiday which was walking and staying in the villages of the Binsar Forest Reserve in the foothills of the Himalayas was really memorable, the people were very welcoming, we got invited to a traditional wedding which was great... Bring a warm layer of clothes for the Jaikuni camp.

Definitely! Talking to our guides, who may have to had to leave the Himalayas for work in the crowded cities, this type of tourism was working for them. The

Memorable parts?
Seeing the enthusiasm of the children and how welcome we felt at the schools. Feeling connected to the local community and other volunteers whilst staying in the comfortable volunteers house instead of a hotel. Also the delicious authentic Indian food cooked by a lovely local lady at the house.

The memorable moment were the people, the children, the colours, the food, the sunsets. I missed Kerala when I got home … the colours, the gentle polite Keralan people, the beautiful friendly children, the interesting Volunteers, the warm weather, the beautiful sunsets, the food, and Gina’s lovely Keralan breakfasts and lunches at the volunteers’ house.

Overall the most memorable part will be the warm welcome and friendliness of all the people we met. Seeing the tigers in Kaziranga National Park, meeting the retired head hunters in the Konyak villages and lunch in a traditional Ao hut at Moponchuket were also wonderful. (more)Terry Chambers
