Provence walking tour, France

How lucky Peter Mayle was to have happened upon Provence, and then to be able to share his experience with millions of others. Don't imagine that there is anything spoilt about Provence however, despite the years of awareness!! It is justifiably a destination of merit and is diverse as you could possibly hope for. With just enough exercise to create an appetite for your excellent dinners, we're offering a mix of walks and activities to enable our guests to gain the maximum from a break here. A must in the Luberon is the Mountagne de Lure - Mount Ventoux's little sister, a mighty limestone escarpment rising to 1826m, lying between the banks of the River Durance to the East and the ...Read more >

Horse riding holiday in the Mercantour

Our horse partner, Denis Longfellow is based in Sainte-Agnès near Menton from the end of September to June. He makes the annual Transhumance up to the Mercantour with his troupe of horses for the summer months, and the reverse trip in the autumn. The annual migration of stock from high pasture to low pasture and back is still very much part of life in the Mercantour National Park. They are celebrated events, attracting all manner of fêtes and activities along the routes. Tailor made trips can also be created for groups of six or more - all year round, and tuition is also available. The Mercantour National Park is just an hour’s drive north of Nice airport, easily accessible from most UK ...Read more >

Gran Paradiso walking holiday in the Italian Alps

Fourteen days in Gran Paradiso National Park, the home of Italy's highest summit (4061m), the higher reaches still adorned with impressive glaciers. An area of sublime tranquility and isolation, rich in alpine fauna and flora. So, what's the difference between this two week sojourn, and that of it's neighbour, the Tour de Mont Blanc.....well, we think it knocks spots off it..... More diverse wildlife Much less human presence on the trails More of a challenge due to its remoteness Scenery equally as stunning - Mont Blanc massif included Fantastic diversity of terrain If you love remote treks, then far more rewarding This is one of those treks that rate up there with some of the Himalayan ...Read more >

Wolf spotting in France

An extremely rare sight anywhere in Europe these days, but especially so this side of the Italian border, this magnificent animal had been hunted out of the region prior to the formation of the National Park. Gradually, les loups have returned, first seen by a local man in the early 1990s. Wild wolves live in the Park, albeit in very small numbers, and so one will be very lucky to spot this shy, elusive creature – but it is possible! Throughout the year with the high peaks are still covered in snow, and the human element very seldom seen we’ll combine five fantastic days walking with searching out for signs of wolf activity and of course all the other fauna and flora with which the area ...Read more >

France walking holiday, French Riviera

The charming village of Sainte Agnès and a sense of calm descending – the hustle of Nice airport and the A8 motorway soon becoming a distant memory. Our introduction to the village was at the start (or finish) of the bi-annual horse transhumance between the village and Le Boréon in the Mercantour. It's very easy to be comfortable here as the pace of life is very un–Riviera!! We have wanted to offer a walking week here as the countryside is stunning, not as severe as our home territory in the Mercantour, yet the effort expended affords superb views of the Mercantour massif to the north, and the shimmering Med to the south – with the promise of seeing Corsica bobbing up across the sea! It ...Read more >

Mercantour National Park self guided walking, France

The Mercantour - a mere hour's drive from the hubbub of the French Riviera stretching north along the Franco Italian border - is one of the least known, yet best National Parks in France. Created in 1979, the protected area covers some 685 square kilometres, consisting of a central zone comprising seven valleys - Roya, Bévéra, Vésubie, Tinée, Haut Var/Cians (in the Alpes Maritimes) plus Verdon and Ubaye (in the Alpes de Haute Provence). There is natural splendour aplenty, coupled with an extremely rich flora and fauna, plus human culture from the Templars to recent military history, thanks to the region's proximity to the Italian border. The area is proud of its "patrimoine" so there ...Read more >

Walking holiday in France, Mercantour Reflections

This week is based in the southern end of the Mercantour Park where the Vésubie valley runs in a North Easterly direction from the coast. Rich and varied, and equally as stunning as anywhere else in the whole of the Alpine chain, the area boasts a unique combination, that of rugged soaring peaks and ridges rising to over 3000 metres on the Italian border, and the valleys from which drop down and culminate in typical Provençal countryside – witness the change in eco-systems from Alpine to Mediterranean, all within a radius of 30km! This holiday in the Mercantour allows exploration of the diversity of the region. The walks will allow you to explore the three main valleys in this corner of ...Read more >
