1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It is difficult to select the most memorable part of the trip, it was just such an amazing and unforgettable experience overall. It started with a postponed project resulting in unexpected time on my hands, a growing desire to undertake a riding adventure and a well-timed airline marketing email featuring Montenegro, a destination that had previously not been on my radar. I put the three things together, started a search and found Responsible Travel. You had a trip that matched my dates and my budget, an ethical approach that really appealed and a great communication style. I looked no further. This was my first trip as a solo traveller and, although I have ridden for decades, the first long distance horse ride of my life. I have to admit to a little apprehension but even from the initial enquiry I felt confident that this was the trip - and the company - for me. The Responsible Travel teams in the UK and locally couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful. From the meet and greet by Angelika on arrival in Montenegro, to the orientation at Mountain Riders ranch with Jann and Istvan, I felt more like a travelling companion than a client. The small size of the group further added to the sense of this being friends riding together for a week. And the riding experience was just wonderful. The horses are fit, well-trained and responsive, and being wholly involved in looking after them from start to end of the day was so fulfilling. The Montenegrin environment is breathtaking – at times wide open space, at others rugged and quite challenging mountain passes; and the excellently planned routes and moderate pace of the ride made the most of this variety. Jann’s great ride leading and the reassuring presence of Istvan in the support vehicle throughout the trip ensured that we had both fun and safety in equal measure. Undertaking a progressive ride is a very special experience - getting to know and understand your horse, learning new riding skills, exploring differing landscapes, discovering your accommodation for the night - from an eco-lodge deep in the mountains to a small hotel in the heart of Kotor, encountering challenges and overcoming fears. For me though the most important part is the relationships I developed with my fellow travelling companions – two and four legged.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

There are not many direct flights to Montenegro and the airline schedules when I travelled didn't tie-in with the start/end dates of the holiday. You really need to persevere to find the best solution as travel was quite expensive. However, I understand that RT are reviewing trip dates for next year in response to this. Take a sheepskin saddle saver if you can fit it in your travelling case. Seven days in the saddle is a long time!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

There is no doubt that the holiday benefitted local people particularly in the sparsely populated mountains where we stayed in lodges/small pensions and the food was sourced/prepared locally. The ethos of the local organisers is steeped in looking after their environment and in ensuring that everything is left exactly as it was found whether that was an overnight stop or lunchtime breaks.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A truly exceptional holiday with truly exceptional people. One of the best trips I've taken. Thank you, Responsible Travel. You are definitely my travel company of choice.
