1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Zipwiring across the jungle - terrifying and exhilarating.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take lots of underwear - not many laundry opportunities. Expect to spend a lot on extras - food and activities.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Costa Rica is clearly geared towards conservation, and there is a deep respect for wildlife and the environment. In a way the trip supports this.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Good - certainly we achieved lots and saw good wildlife. We had a great guide and driver who were knowledgeable and friendly. The holiday was not as active as I and others had hoped (walks in jungle we're more like gentle strolls and not very long - about 4km). White water rafting, for instance, was only half a day or 2 hours on the water. The food was just average and not enough choice. My main observation was that this was an expensive trip - most meals not included (and not much choice) probably cost at least $40 pppd and many activities were 'extra' e.g. Turtle walk $35, night walk $15, waterfall swim $15.....and then there are the proper activities e.g. Rafting and zipwiring (approx $50 each). Rainy August season was greyer and cooler than I had expected (I thought it would be more like monsoon - hot and building - but actually just grey much of time).

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our guide, Erick of from the holiday providers, knew almost everything about his beautiful country. We will remember all the wildlife encounters from Eyelash pit vipers to American crocodiles, the iridescent hummingbirds, the noisy monkeys. All the shades of green in the serene, cloud forests of Monteverde. All the spectacular sunsets. Seeing a sloth up close on a boat trip in Tortugero. Watching green sea turtles on a beach at midnight, Rafting down the Sarapiqui river trying not to capsize. The beautiful beach at Manuel Antonio. The rice and beans and fried plantains. The good travelling companions.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Invest in Rainforest Publications field guides, they are great value and incredibly useful. Visit the hummingbird garden at the Selvatura adventure park, Monteverde (after, or instead of, the zip wire). There is also a forest trail and reptile and amphibian exhibits where our guide Juan Carlos was very knowledgeable. The chocolate farm in Arenal is educational and great fun. Take quick drying clothes and enough socks as it is difficult to get things dry in the humid climate. Take a waterproof coat as it can rain spectacularly, although we only got wet twice in the rainy season. Take enough cash as all the additional tours prefer dollars to credit cards. Take a torch as it gets dark early.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All our guides were local and had a wealth of knowledge about the biodiversity of the ecosystems especially on a boat tour in Tortuguero and a night tour in Monteverde. We visited the Sea turtle conservancy project in Tortuguero. We picked up litter from the beaches. We stayed in a family run lodge in Sarapiqui. Costa Rican Trails have a sustainability award.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We would definitely recommend this holiday. We travelled a lot but it wasn't too tiring, even for the children, as we didn't have to worry about anything. Erick, and our driver Jose, arranged all the additional tours we wanted to do; rafting, turtle watching and a night safari and Erick took us out at 5.45 am for a specialist bird watching walk. They even took us to a laundry to get our clothes dry and bought birthday cakes for members of the group... twice!
