Reviews for Canada holiday, national parks and wildlife

review 28 May 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

1. Watching whales, seals, sea otters, eagles and bears from a small boat off Vancouver Island. 2. Walking on a number of trails in National Parks in utterly magnificent surroundings in the Rockies

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be aware that enjoying the Rockies is highly weather dependant. In poor weather one would see precious little. If you want to walk/hike do not go earlier than May because access to large areas of the National Parks are still closed because of snow. Consider splitting the trip in two. After Vancouver Island we drove up to the Rockies. This took up an easy, pleasant and quite interesting two days, but nothing like as exciting as the Rockies themselves. One could hand in the car after Vancouver Island, get to Jasper/Calgary by air or even train and hire another car there. This would maximise time spent in really fabulous country. Be aware that the really well known places are very popular. Lots of Japanese tourist busses etc. As soon as you are away from these few places it is a great deal more peaceful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not a lot. We were provided with a large SUV. We stayed mainly in smart, modern hotels some owned by chains-possibly not Canadian. ( In Canada there tends to be a big gap in standards between these places and unattractive motels). Restaurants/hotels serve up ludicrously large helpings, much of which is wasted. We shared one portion between two and were more than adequately fed! Against all that, once one is walking in the National Parks the environmental impact is close to zero, and the authority is good at keeping it like that.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We enjoyed it greatly. The weather was kind. The arrangements worked pretty well. The UK travel agencyl-were most helpful, quick and efficient, and their Canadian counterpart did their job well, albeit with a couple of minor hitches. We saw a great deal- including much wildlife- and were most impressed. Driving in Canada is a dream. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. We were particuarly impressed by the National Parks, which are immaculate in every way.
