Reviews for Belize and Guatemala family holiday

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The two day visit to caves and the day trip to Tikal were very impressive, and the local guides used for the occasion were really knowledgeable and inspiring. In particular, Id like to praise our guide Gio who did the cave trip with us - not many transmit knowledge and enthusiasm the way he did.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The country depends very much on tourism (50% of its GDP), and most of that tourism is there to visit the barrier reef and the marine biodiversity it has to offer. As such, one would expect the government and local population to have preservation as its prime focus. Unfortunately that is not the impression given. The number of boats permitted to roam the reef is indiscriminate. We saw boats crashing into the coral on low tide, and local sailors contaminating the water by throwing overboard disused fishing lines and hooks. The beaches are full of algae, which creates a stench given the heat from early on in the morning. The island / town of San Pedro, whilst amusing from a Caribbean laissez-faire perspective, is unfortunately an environmental disaster waiting to happen. I dont think the Belizean consciousness has got to the maturity stage yet to realise the damage the local population and tourism is doing to its environment - my sense is Belize is way behind other more "mature" destinations such as Costa Rica in that sense.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, Im sure it benefited local people, and that help is much needed given the degree of poverty we saw. Im not really sure, however, how we contributed to reducing the environmental impact other than the testimonial non washing of linen / towels on a daily basis, etc..

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would definitely travel again with Responsible Travel / this operator, but will be more picky at choosing a destination where environmental conservation is at the forefront of the local mindset, and where I can actually contribute with my presence
