1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Valley of the Geyser helitour is well worthwhile; all the volcano stays and walks were great but the unexpected highlights for us were the water trips - bear watching while floating down the river (including that bear that came through the campsite in the middle of the night and got to within 2 metres of our cook who woke everyone up with her scream) and whale watching on the bay tour from Petropavlovsk. With plenty of volcanoes in the background in both cases !

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

1. Mosquitos are real - not everywhere, but take a hat and net (you can buy on Kamchatka but best to take your own). Plus plenty of repellant. 2. Helicopter trip - cash or $ may be easier for you than taking a fistful of roubles. All three currecies accepted (cash only). 3. Weather is unpredictable - do follow that advice on layers and gloves. 4. Diesel generator provided campsite charging - so taking a power pack isn't necessary but gives your camera and phone (etc.) more flexibility. Don't bother with a solar charger. Mobile reception practically zero away from towns.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Tour leaders made sure rubbish was removed from campsites and no traces of our stay (apart from the loo pit !) were left behind., so environmentally OK.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Weather is what it is on Kamchatka - expect some rainy days during your trip and maybe some of the segments will be affected ... That apart, a truly unique part of the world with an exceptionally friendly crew and a nice well-travelled international bunch of fellow travellers. To be recommended.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were many great moments. Our group seemed to gel very well, and the Russian team were terrific (although admittedly we had to get the first guide removed after day 3). I loved the rafting section, close to the bears and so peaceful. Shame about the rain. The lunar base camp and Dead Forest were extraordinary. Weather precluded a trip to the Valley of the Geysers, instead we helicoptered to Kuril Lake: what a day! The pilot descended into a volcano crater on the return leg. A Russian bath in the second week was most welcome.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The hiking on days 2 and 3 are hard. Be sure to prepare for this and get in shape before the trip. I had to give up on day 2, so missed the fumaroles and boiling mud. Be prepared to complain: we had a Russian couple with us who made sure our first guide got replaced when he proved sub-standard. Wifi is widely available; you will also get a mobile signal almost everywhere! You will pong....there are no washing facilities at the camp sites (except a river, of course). Take toilet roll and be ready to 'go' in the bushes. The longest without a wash is 3 days. Buy snacks when you can: juice, nuts, fruit, etc. You are outdoors all day.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Russians made up all of the staff. They were excellent. Sadly, our rubbish was just dumped in the forest.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was excellent. Everything was well organised. I would definitely return to the same destination, and on the same itinerary...just got to get some fitness back so I can complete the hiking bits.
