Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Stephen has a broad knowledge about bicycles which means that he is particularly skilled in the area of bike refurbishment and repair. As a consequence, his business revolves around recycling, or as Stephen says it was formerly known as ‘cannibalising’ bicycles. He rarely buys bicycles brand new and endeavours to acquire second hand bikes and those destined for the scrap yards. Over the years, he’s obtained an extensive selection of bike parts allowing him to effectively fit old bikes with good parts from other bikes getting them up and running, fit for public use again.

He runs his rental business from his home, which is partially powered by the solar panels on the roof. Stephen likes to encourage long-term as well as short-term rental of bikes in order to reduce car use and get people out into the beautiful South Downs countryside and the coastline which is only half a mile away.

The Impacts of this Trip

Stephen has been involved in the Bespoke Cycle Group in the past year. Bespoke is a pressure group that campaigns to make it safer and easier for anyone to get around Eastbourne by bicycle. They acknowledge that the area is a prime cycling location with its flattish terrain, yet the routes are poor and dangerous due to the traffic and poor facilities. Bespoke are campaigning for a network of safe, well-signposted cycle routes from the town centre to residential areas to encourage people onto their bikes.

The group were recently granted £200 by the Sussex Police to directly promote safer cycling. Stephen accessed his resources as a biking business and purchased a lot of bike lights, which he and other Bespoke members will be giving away absolutely free for those cyclist who need them. Stephen states that he always briefs his customers about the dangers of cycling, the state of the roads and the care needed when near Beachy Head's cliff edge, a popular destination for his customers.
