Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Nordic Walking for Health programmes are an alternative way to access and explore the great outdoors. Special Nordic walking poles can be used on and off road without damaging the environment - they actually reduce the impact of human foot fall on the ground. Nordic walkers are always encouraged to care for the environment and offered a Souvenir Edition of the South Downs National Park Countryside Code. Nordic walking routes are carefully selected and, when used, the code is put into practice.

All meeting places used for Nordic Walking for Health sessions are accessible by public transport. For example, in Brighton, public footpaths, a cycling lane, bus and train services all serve Stanmer Park, a preferred Nordic Walking for Health location. The twice-monthly Nordic Healthwalks in the city all take place at locations on bus routes.

As the only means of motorised transport to and from the Riverdale House B&B to various Nordic walking locations is by car, Nordic Walking for Health promotes car sharing. Bicycles can also be hired as a more sustainable alternative whilst staying at the B&B.

The Impacts of this Trip

Nordic walking is low impact outdoors activity that promotes health and well-being by walking with the whole body through the use of specialist poles. It meets government physical activity guidelines as it involves effective aerobic and resistance exercise at the same time - all through a simple adaptation of natural walking.

Nordic walking can be done in groups providing a communal activity and social networking opportunity for meeting people and making friends. Social Nordic walking groups have been set up locally through Nordic Walking for Health.

Nordic Walking for Health supports the national Walking for Health campaign by promoting Nordic walking through local Healthwalk schemes. In Brighton & Hove, discounted Nordic Walking for Health courses are available to the public for people who want to participate in local Nordic Healthwalks. Existing voluntary Healthwalk leaders can become Nordic Healthwalk leaders with ongoing support from Nordic Walking for Health.

Course sessions and group walks start from local cafes, tea rooms and pubs that are serviced by public transport.
