Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

We really encourage all of our visitors to consider the environment and to therefore leave their cars at home.

The Brighton & Hove Coaster bus, the 13X, runs every thirty minutes in the summer from Eastbourne Pier, the Arndale Centre in Eastbourne and Churchill Square in Brighton. Both Eastbourne and Brighton have well connected train lines to London and beyond.

We further this consideration of the environment by suggesting bringing a picnic on the 13X, walking the Seven Sisters to Cuckmere Haven and taking the bus home.

At the centre we provide a collection of books and information sheets on birds, bees, butterflies, animals and plants which inhabit or can be seen on the downs. We do this so that visitors can better understand and respect what they see, such as the yellow horned poppy and hawthorn flowers, as they explore the environment.

We’re keen advocates of, ‘take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time...’

The Impacts of this Trip

Our local community is at the very core of the organisation of the centre, in fact over 30 willing volunteers help to run, manage and maintain the place. We’re extremely lucky to have this help as without it the centre would be unable to open.

Due to the fact that we’re representative and very proud of the unique landscape of which we’re a part of , we are assisting in the Save Our Stripes campaign, which is fundraising to get the iconic stripes repainted on Beachy Head lighthouse – currently at risk due to funding shortages. We’ve already supported the cause with a donation but continue to fundraise by selling mini lighthouses in our gift shop with over half the proceeds going towards the SOS appeal.

The assortment of beautiful artworks and photographs on display and for sale in our art gallery are virtually all done by volunteers, and donated to the gallery.
