Ethiopia is a vast country with lovely people. We were always promptly met and greeted. Be patient on the varied English skills -- and try and check out what the tipping protocol is. Also research the weather carefully before deciding what to pack - we took too much warm stuff.
The U.K. Government advises against travel to the Dannakil. We were very well looked after, with a police and armed escort. Having a friendly local guide who knows the locals meant we felt very safe. Eskinder is always on hand by phone (great mobile network nearly everywhere) and will help out with anything.
We found Ethiopian airlines good - planes, staff and security. Use Eskinder to sort out local flights - it is much better value and will mean you get to see more of the country in the time you have.
The large network of guides who are mainly self employed, and used by the holiday provider helps the locals. Entrance fees supports both the churches and the Simien region. We were worried about the drought but can see that many areas have sufficient water and plenty of food.
Fantastic. Ethiopia is beautiful, ancient and dramatic. A sight to see around every corner. The holiday provider crafted our itinerary, provided some superb guides and ensured we experienced the country as more of a traveller than a tourist.
