When Richard Branson was trying to fly round the world in a balloon, a disabled friend of mine said "If he's so desperate for thrills, he should try using a wheelchair for a week. I get that kind of excitement every time I try to cross the road!" Maybe that was a little exaggerated, but I knew what he meant. As a wheelchair user of some 30+ years, I've had to live in a world that was less than perfect when it came to meeting my needs. I'm not talking about the outer reaches of Mongolia either; I'm talking about the UK. At least things here have been improving. The same, however, can't be said for most of the rest of the world and there's nothing like the annual holiday to bring this into sharp focus. Whilst many 'Responsible Travellers' are contemplating a trip to the depths of the Amazon rainforest or the top of the Himalayas, I'm dreaming of wheeling along the front at Benidorm!
