“It’s hard to imagine a place to stay that could be as inspiringly beautiful as the Kasbah du Toukbal. The opportunity to stay within reach of Marrakech and yet be far enough to enjoy the seclusion and grandeur of the Atlas Mountains make this the perfect place to stay in Morocco. Founded on the renowned and traditional hospitality of the Berber people, this sanctuary is a definite highpoint on my personal favourites.”

Kasbah du Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains

Only 40 miles from Marrakech but the peace and quiet and seclusion are so complete the city seems a million miles away.

Equipped for day visits, seminars, residential stays or as a base for more active pursuits, stay for a few hours or a week! The Kasbah du Toubkal is an extraordinary venture, the product of an imaginative Berber and European partnership. There is a shared belief that the beauty of the Toubkal National Park should be accessible to all who respect it.

To this end the Kasbah has been transformed using traditional methods, from the home of a Feudal Ciad into an unprecedented haven; one that provides a variety of accommodation and event possibilities to meet differing requirements and budgets.

The Kasbah is a welcoming environment for those seeking a comfortable mountain refuge, and for those who wish for superb rooms in a stunning setting. It is also a conference centre for those who are searching for a venue that inspires, one that provides peace in a spectacular and remote location, whilst providing the best of modern equipment. The Kasbah du Toubkal is not a hotel in the traditional sense, it is more an extension of the hospitality that stems from the home of the Berbers who run it. As Churchill said to Roosevelt "If you are in Marrakech you owe it to yourself to visit the Atlas" It is difficult to describe the Kasbah fully one needs to visit but our guests are often more eloquent than ourselves:

The greatest strength of the Kasbah (greater even than the stunning location) is the people who live and work there. The rooms are superb, the food was a wonderfully rewarding adventure for us, the roof terrace is my favourite place in the world. I am left with wonderful memories, a changed outlook on life and a burning desire to return as soon as is humanly possible. I cannot say enough to congratulate everyone involved in creating something as unique and precious as the Kasbah"

how this holiday makes a difference
We funded an Ambulance for the village and built an incinerator and instigated a rubbish clearance system. A 5% levy is made on the Kasbah income and handed to the village association (Association Des Basins d'Imlil) and Education For All. The Association Bassins d’Imlil covers the whole of the surrounding valleys. This association provides the ambulance that you see in Imlil which provides a service to the local population and visitors, other community projects that have been undertaken include the rubbish clearance system and the provision of the village Hammam. Education For All helps provide college education for girls from the rural High Atlas.

We instigated a rubbish clearance policy in 1997 for the region including the building of a communal incinerator. We have equipped the Kasbah with water filters to discourage the use of plastic bottled water. All supplies are purchased locally as much as possible and all staff are from the local region. As much as possible of the Kasbah purchases are from the local area this includes both consumables for the running of the establishment and the materials and labour used in the construction process. We have also sponsored a "Tourist Code of good practise".

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
