Description from the holiday company

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism: Ghana wildlife safari

We hope that by increasing responsible tourism in and around Ghana’s vulnerable wildlife parks and areas, the Ghanaian government will see the economical benefits and stop the deforestation, and increase government resources into protecting Ghana’s fragile flora and fauna. By visiting and supporting local eco tourism projects and benefiting the local economy, we encourage the continuation and protection of the local culture, history and traditions of these communities.

We ensure the revenue is used for projects that benefit the whole community, which encourages them to protect the surrounding wildlife and flora. By booking this tour, a percentage of the profits goes towards our community project of improving school facilities in Womasi village. We employ local guides, drivers and cooks during all our tours, we source supplies where possible from the local communities & aim to use local businesses wherever possible. We encourage our guests to purchase goods and souvenirs locally & support our community project.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

To see hippos and elephants in their natural environment. To be in a very remote area (hippo sanctuary) where even the text messages couldn't reach you and enjoy lovely local meals prepared by our own cook there. To arrive in Elimina beach resort on the last evening and spend a lovely morning by the sea.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Travelling can get tiring as distances are long. Be active and ask your guides if you want to see some alternative stuff - they are flexible if your requests are reasonable. In case you are travelling in December-March, it is a harmattan season and there is a lot of sand and dust in the air. Bush fires are also common due to the dry and hot wind. It doesn't hinder you to travel but if you suffer e.g. from asthma, you might want to take it into consideration when adjusting preventive medication.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I hope it did. Travel agency is a local and very professional one. Hippo sanctuary is the only one in Ghana and maintained as a joint venture with local people. I hope that visits there will encourage village and local authorities to keep and further develop it. The village had recently got electricity and the well seemed quite new too so I presume it's partly thanks to the sanctuary. Elephants are also endangered species in Western Africa. I hope again that visits to their havens like Mole National Park helps Ghanaians to see the benefits of saving the remaining individuals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Travel agency is reliable and professional. Our holiday was interesting, we saw a big part of the country in 10 days and several animal sanctuaries which was our main target (monkeys, hippos, elephants). Hotels were adequate. Traffic and general infrastructure is quite chaotic and general feeling was that there is still a bit to do to make Ghana a major tourist destination. I like the people, and as a woman, I felt safe travelling there.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Getting right up close to the elephants on a foot safari in Mole National Park and sleeping under the stars in a remote village in the hippo sanctuary.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This tour gives good coverage of culture, history and wildlife over a large part of Ghana. Be flexible and your guide will adapt the tour in places to meet special interests.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The holiday showed respect for the people, for Ghana and for the environment. I hope that we did our bit to help some local economies. The people were certainly incredibly welcoming.
