travellers' tales
The most memorable part was night kayaking. Quietly gliding across the water with the phosphorent algae lighting up and sparkling with each paddle stroke was amazing. The only way I can describe it is to liken it to fairy dust.

|
Our guides/instructors are constantly aware of their surrounding environment and always pass on this information to the traveler, as well as suggestions on how to minimize potential damage to the wildlife and marine eco system. We are economical in our use of natural resources (heat, electricity and water).
We regularly collect any plastics or other foreign materials which find on the ocean or shore while kayaking, and recycle them later when possible. We like to give the varied marine life lots of privacy and space – our policy is "look but do not touch." We have a "no trace" policy which implies leaving our environment as we found it.Our sea kayaks are made with recyclable plastics when possible and of course sea kayaks do not omit any noxious gas or petrol fumes or other substances, and the trail of a sea kayak soon disappears once the kayak has moved on! We regularly rescue people and animals in distress with our sea kayaks (i.e. swimmers caught in currents, sheep and goats on islands and dolphins caught in nets). Jim Kennedy is an active member of the local Coast and Cliff rescue service, and also of the Whale and Dolphin Rescue Unit. We direct travelers towards locally owned establishments (restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, shops and B&Bs) which we believe has a beneficial effect on the holistic well being of the area. These premises source all of their food and produce locally and organically wherever possible, catering for vegetarians and omnivores alike. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
