Our Northern Lights watching holidays

Our Northern Lights watching holidays keep your eyes on the skies – but also grounded in the place, offering wilderness lodgings, wildlife tracking, snowshoeing and Sámi kota dining alongside night-time aurora chases. These adventures are all designed to offer you the best chance of spotting this cosmic event. They pick their timing: for the long nights of winter and lively peaks of the equinoxes. They pick their place: the north of the world, in pollution-free wilderness. And they match you up with great aurora guides and accommodation, including family-owned lodges and glass-roofed cabins. Whatever shape they take, all our Northern Lights watching holidays give the big tourist buses the boot and connect you with local experts.

Northern Lights watching holiday highlights

Lapland & the Nordics

Most of our Northern Lights watching holidays head for Lapland and the Nordics. Here, above the Arctic Circle and away from big cities, are wide, pollution-free skies bright with stars and the promise of the Northern Lights. Rovaniemi is popular with Santa seekers, but our holidays head further north to more peaceful places like Inari – the centre of Sámi culture in Finland, and home to lakeside wilderness hotels and snow activities. Tromso is great for combining city and sky, as well as sailing into fjords where orca are busy hunting herring. Want to see it all? Hop on our Nordic tours that cover Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Greenland & Iceland

This is where our trips take a turn for the dramatic. In Greenland and Iceland, you’ll see the Northern Lights from fjords, frozen lava flows, steaming hot springs and open ocean. Our small ship cruises voyage between Iceland and Greenland. Alternatively, pick the island that suits you. Iceland has a near-endless roll call of activity and accommodation options, including glass-walled spa hotels with aurora alarms and family-friendly activities. Greenland is an Arctic adventure. It’s harder to reach, which means far fewer tourists – and therein lies the charm. Local experts will take you out in search of the Northern Lights under unpolluted skies where creaking icebergs are the only sounds.

Alaska & Canada

Our Alaska trips are based around Fairbanks, a city famous for its dramatic aurora displays. It’s also a city filled with people who’ll share a bit about life in the Arctic – at their reindeer ranch, during a curling lesson or while chasing the Northern Lights. Our trips to Canada also bundle Northern Lights viewing amongst a line-up of winter activities. Head north for your best chance to catch the aurora – to Manitoba, where local guides will regale you with tales about living alongside polar bears. The Rockies are also an option. Here, a Northern Lights tour will be part of an active adventure of snowshoeing, ice skating and wildlife tracking. And when the aurora does pop up, it’s above sky-scraping snowy mountains.
