Responsible tourism: Batek Tribal Experience in Taman Negara

Environment

This volunteering project site is located at one of Malaysia's ancient tropical rainforest which is relatively unexplored. However, as poaching is quite a serious threat to wildlife in Malaysia, the project aims to identify the animals present in the forest by setting up camera traps to gain photographic evidence of the animals and also deter the poachers. Through the photographs, we will use them to educate the local community about animal conservation and also persuade the government to protect this area of rainforest which is highly biodiversed. We also hope that volunteers of this program will learn more about these wildlife and their importance to conserve and appreciate their existance.

Through this project, we also aim to educate the local community about the importance of protecting the wildlife in the jungle through educating their children. The program includes Conservation English classes where by volunteers will teach the local community children English and incorporate environmental awareness in the lesson plans. With this, the community will have the opportunity to learn English and also be aware of current environmental issues.

Community

The volunteering project supports the community through several ways such as:

1) By you joining us on foraging trips and even camping you are helping to preserve the culture of the Batek people. The modern world is impacting the Batek tribe and unfortunately they cant live 100% off the rainforest so they need an additional income. By joining the foraging and the camping the Batek people are earning money so it means they are doing what they love and getting paid for it.

2) The Batek's land is underthreat from Palm Oil, Mining and Quarrying activities with several companies slowly destroying the Batek's ancestral land. Each trip you will help to collect data about forest usage as well as what it means to the Batek. The data will be collected to the strict protocols so an eventual GIS map can be submitted to decision makers to try and protect what is left of the Bateks ancestral land. The ultimate aim is a Batek-managed Forest
