Accessibility
Overview:
We believe that travel is for everyone. This is a really core principle for us and we passionately believe that where there’s a will there’s a way. We take all ages and all levels of fitness and we do everything possible to ensure that our tours are accessible for everyone, irrespective of physical ability or cognitive conditions. In our experience, there is almost always a way of making a tour suitable for everyone!
Limited mobility:
Everything that we do is tailor made, so if we have guests with limited mobility, for example, we will tailor the programme to take this into account, and will suggest hotels which will suit. Just let us know what your requirements are and we can talk you through the options.
Wheelchair:
In most of our destinations, it is not possible to arrange a special vehicle adapted for wheelchairs, but we are normally able to arrange a larger vehicle which will have ample storage for a wheelchair. Some hotels have wheelchair access; these may be few and far between but we can suggest where these might be possible. Where there is no wheelchair access, but not too many steps, hotel staff are often happy to help with lifting the wheelchair. We will discuss each individual scenario with you to ensure that hotels will be suitable.
Blind/ limited vision:
All of our customers will be travelling as part of a family group therefore we would expect that one of the family would be able to provide necessary assistance to a traveller with limited vision. Information in braille is almost never available but local support can be provided, for example ensuring that porters are available to carry luggage in airports / train stations / hotels so that the travel partner is free to assist the person with limited vision. If we are including activities booked with external providers we will discuss your requirements and check with our provider that the activity will be safe and possible.
Deaf/limited hearing:
As stated above, all of our customers will be travelling as part of a family group therefore we would expect that one of the family would be able to provide necessary assistance to a traveller with limited hearing.
Cognitive conditions:
We have experience in providing appropriate spaces for all travellers, whether this means hotels with access to outdoor space, ground floor rooms, quiet rooms and so on. As all of our customers will be travelling as part of a family group therefore we would expect that one of the family would be also be on hand to provide necessary one on one assistance to a traveller with cognitive conditions as required.
Free from food:
If guests let us know about serious dietary issues (or allergies) we will we'll pass the information on to their airline (if we have booked the flights) and our flight suppliers, and ask that it is noted on their booking. Additionally, we will arrange translations into the relevant local language(s) to explain these, and will brief guides to ensure that appropriate food is requested.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
We aim to keep motorised travel to a minimum where practical. Some of the lodges we use also raft in or use shared boat transfers. We avoid internal flights whenever possible, and so when travelling to Corcovado or Tortuguero we encourage clients to go by land or boat, rather than flying. We also encourage a ferry journey rather than a longer overland drive, e.g. from Puntarenas travelling to the South Pacific coast. You’ll mainly be eating locally sourced food while you are in Costa Rica, with several of the lodges and haciendas we use implementing a ‘farm to table’ model, and the seafood is abundant. For vegetarians and vegans there are colourful local salads and an array of tropical fruits.
In line with Costa Rica's national commitment to carbon neutrality, we work with local suppliers to keep the environmental footprint of your journey as low as possible.
We prioritise working with local partners and lodges accredited under recognized sustainability frameworks, such as Costa Rica's CST (Certification for Sustainable Tourism) scheme.
In our pre-trip documentation, we encourage guests to use air conditioning mindfully, reuse towels, and bring refillable or filter water bottles to avoid single-use plastics.
Our guests are asked to respect local wildlife and are given comprehensive briefings on how to behave during all activities. All wildlife-related activities are carefully vetted to ensure they are responsibly run, for instance we encourage people to avoid so-called 'sloth parks' in La Fortuna as these are not considered to be responsibly run, with the sloths sometimes being transported to the parks in order for visitors to see them, rather than naturally living in that specific park.
We select sustainable forest lodges and wilderness accommodations designed to integrate into their natural surroundings.
Costa Rica is home to a sensitive ecosystem including jungle and coral reef, so protecting the environment is a priority. Many of the lodges cultivate their own organic produce on-site, compost food waste, and implement water-recycling systems. They make a point of promoting this and being proud of it.
During your journey, you may visit the Nicoya Peninsula—home to one of the world's rare 'Blue Zones,' where local traditions, plant-rich diets, and strong community ties contribute to exceptional longevity.
he local guides who lead our excursions are trained in conservation principles, with many actively involved in regional ecological research. We ask all guests to observe wildlife guidance: do not feed animals, stay on marked trails, pack out all waste, and keep a respectful distance from wildlife.
Cosa Rican national parks are incredibly special, and we work with our local partners to ensure that all excursions into any parks are done with certified operators. National Park fees and permits help direct revenue into where it is needed to promote conservation.
People
All our tours in Costa Rica are run in conjunction with local partners that have been chosen partly because they provide a fantastic service, and also because they share our environmental and social goals.Where guests enjoy the services of local guides throughout their visit, we ensure that these guides are from the same regional area and will be pleased to answer questions and give an excellent insight into the way of life in the region. Guides in Costa Rica are typically experts in their field, passionate about their role in preserving the ecosystem and encourage visitors to act responsibly. As well as nature guides, we promote local activities such as cookery experiences in someone's homestead, or cultural visits. We often include a visit to the Maleku community, an indigenous group living close to the Arenal Waterfall, helping direct some tourist funds towards preserving their culture and lifestyle.
As much as possible, we work with locally owned hotels and lodges, promoting relationships with hoteliers who offer refillable toiletries rather than single-use sachets or minis. We recommend that our clients eat in independent establishments and visit independently owned shops and markets. We constantly add to our list of recommendations, which is sent to travellers before they go.
Our programmes are run together with partners that are owned and run by local people and who share our belief in the importance of operating in a socially responsible way, paying staff fairly and offering appropriate working hours and conditions.
We also understand that tipping is culturally appropriate and makes up a portion of income in certain job types, therefore we also provide detailed guidelines for our travellers as to suitable amounts.
By booking with us, you will be supporting various local guides, drivers, and service providers (e.g., hotel staff, market stallholders, boat drivers etc.), promoting employment from local communities, and good job opportunities for people coming up through training. Guide training in Costa Rica is of a particularly high standard and by including guided activities (instead of trying to self-guide in national parks) this ensures that the guides receive plenty of work and encourages investment in quality guiding.
This trip is LGBTQ+ friendly, and we welcome families of all types on our trips.
