Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
We believe that wild animals should be viewed – with no contact or interaction – doing what they do best: living in the wild. This trip includes game drives in Kruger National Park, Chobe National Park and at a private game reserve in South Africa. Our leaders are trained to ensure that visitors don’t call out, whistle or try to get the attention of an animal as uncommon noises cause stress for them. Our drivers and local guides are also trained not to use their vehicle to get an animal to move or drive off road to get a better view or get closer to the animals. Unfortunately, in Victoria Falls many businesses offer an optional 'Walk with the Lions' experience. We ask all travellers to avoid this activity as it is contrary to our Responsible Travel policy. The lion walking industry directly contributes to the captive breeding and canned hunting of lions. In 2018 Botswana banned the importation, trade and commercial use of plastic bags. This includes plastic bags that travellers may bring into the country in their luggage. Intrepid provides travellers with reusable fabric tote bags. The tote bags are made locally, providing employment and training opportunities to members of the local community. By providing travellers with tote bags we are supporting local government regulations and avoiding the creation of more single-use plastic waste.
People
The best folk to show you the heart of a destination are the ones that live there, which is why we work exclusively with local leaders. Our leaders are not only travel experts, they’re teachers, travel gurus and enthusiastic purveyors of grassroots experiences. They’ll just as easily steer you through the laneways of a city as help you strike up a conversation with the locals – and all with a smile. On this trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana, travellers will also be joined by local guides in Kruger, Victoria Falls and Chobe National Parks. In each location these guides will bring to life the destination, showing off their expert knowledge of Africa’s wildlife.Through our Foundation, we support local organisations around the world to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable individuals and communities through sustainable travel experiences. We also include activities and visits on our trips to NGOs around the world who are supporting local communities through programs tailored to their needs. In Zimbabwe, our foundation supports the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust. This organization recognizes the conflict between the unique African wildlife and local communities that rely on farming crops and livestock. To protect both the animals and people’s livelihoods, the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust employs Community Guardians to collaborate with locals to solve current problems and mitigate future incidents.
