Around midway through this self guided Peloponnese cycling holiday in Greece, you attain perfection. Specifically, the lemon forest on the island of Poros, wherein you’ll find temples, waterfalls and old windmills tucked within the trees, and where the air is perfumed with the fragrance of citrus fruit. Not long after, you find yourself on the pebbly beach of Ermioni, a seaside town where the white-painted houses creep up the surrounding hillsides, and you can stretch out your legs with a stroll on the promenade. This is cycling for the gods.
You begin in the seaside town of Palaia Epidaurus, home to a small Roman theatre and a pine-fringed beach. Having acquired your rental bikes, you’ll set off the next day for the island of Poros, following a route around the Saronic Gulf until the port. A popular day trip from nearby Athens, Poros is easily explored by bike, which takes you swiftly away from the busiest areas. Beside the lemon forest there are beaches, the ruins of a temple to Poseidon, and also the more recent ruins of a Russian naval dockyard.
Back on the mainland, you make for the Argolis region, and then the idyllic island of Spetses. Long a haunt of the yacht crowd, the island is car-free, so you’ll be pedalling in competition only with the occasional e-scooter or horse-drawn cart. You’ll be glad to pack a swimsuit and towel, as there are many opportunities to take a dip.
Cycling is a wonderful way to see the Peloponnese. It allows you to see much of the region in a week, and to reach less-visited areas. It is also very culturally immersive, as you pass through small communities where cyclists get a friendly greeting and there is often a tiny taverna where you’ll be the first foreign visitors of the day. Electric bikes can be hired.
