Description of Crete and Athens holiday

Crete is famed for its busy resorts and sandy beaches, but this tailor made Crete and Athens holiday immerses you in the island’s fascinating history and culture. You’ll visit popular locations such as Chania and the Palace of Knossos, but also spend plenty of time in less-visited rural parts of Crete where the atmosphere is a lot more peaceful, and even a small income from tourism can go a long way.

Boat trips to picturesque bays and islands, where you can swim and enjoy traditional lunches on deck or on the beach, are combined with nature walks, tours of olive oil factories and historic sites, and free time to simply wander quiet little fishing villages or coastal trails.

Day-trips are packed with adventure on a tour that’s particularly ideal for families looking for a break from the ordinary in Crete. Take the two-hour, shaded trek through the Imbros Gorge for instance; and a day of beachcombing and swimming in the warm sea off Elafonisi; and there is also the enticing prospect of a boat trip to Spinalonga to uncover its history as a pirate refuge, a Venetian fortress, and a leper colony.

After a week roaming Crete, with an itinerary that can be shaped to your interests, you head to Athens. Here, a brilliant local guide will lead you on an informative and entertaining walking tours of sites such as the Acropolis, and you’ll take a memorable excursion to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion just south of the capital. This tour is packed with adventure and enthralling stories, yet the pace is always wonderfully relaxed. The perfect way to take in Crete and Athens.

The holiday was memorable in many ways; firstly, for being so well organised from start to finish. From the quality of hotels and trips to sight-seeing and restaurant tips to efficient transfers and hire cars being delivered and picked up from the hotel door - it was family travel with all the sting taken out.Highlights were the beautiful village of Lefkes and Volax, the great boat trip around Antiparos and the delicious food all over. Paros and Tonos were wonderful islands to visit - Greece without the hordes. Read full review

Traveling abroad for the first time with my two young children, 8 yo and 10 yo. I wanted to incorporate some history and culture, while making space to relax and to swim and swim in Aegean. Highlights of our two week trip included visiting and having an excellent guided tour of the Parthenon/Acropolis and the modern and user-friendly Acropolis museum. We also enjoyed our time spent on Paros, in a quiet side of the island away from the touristy hustle and bustle. Read full review
