Sail across the South Atlantic Ocean
Description of Sail across the South Atlantic Ocean
Sail the South Atlantic and visit the beautiful island of Saint Helena.
Embark on an extraordinary round trip sailing adventure across the South Atlantic Ocean, that includes two amazing stop-overs in Namibia and the isolated island of St Helena.
The voyage will teach you everything needed for a major ocean crossing. Led by an experienced skipper and first mate, this journey is more than just sailing. Choose to join either leg or the full round trip - both legs include five days accommodation on the island in a local, independently run hotel.
Leg 1: Start in Cape Town with boat prep at the Royal Cape Yacht Club. Then sail up Africa’s coast to Lüderitz, Namibia, logging your 60nm skippered passage along the way if desired. Explore the desert ghost town of Kolmanskop before setting out on a lovely "downwind" crossing of the South Atlantic to St Helena Island.
Spenda few days onshore exploring this sub-tropical paradise with self catering accommodation included. There's lots to see and do including meeting the world's oldest living animal, seeing the final resting place of Napoleon who was imprisoned on the island and, of course meeting all the wonderfully friendly islanders.
Our guests can either fly back from St Helena to Cape Town or continue to Leg 2.
Leg 2: Leaving St Helena, we initially sail west, deep into the South Atlantic. It's a wild and majestically isolated Ocean which will see dynamic sailing and big seas. This leg is, perfect for practicing Celestial Navigation and is a real "off-shore" passage that will count to mile building. Duration: ~3 weeks.
Join both legs for a 40-day, 4,500-nautical-mile adventure of a lifetime

CARBON REDUCTIONWe are committed to reducing our environmental impact wherever possible. We are the first Sailing operator to measure the sailing impact of every trip, taking account of Fossil fuel consumption, food and food waste, marina services and accommodation.
The St Helena trip has a Co2 footprint of 85Kg per day sailed (or 10.6KG per person per day). Over 50% of this footprint is caused by food consumed on board. We are now sourcing all our food from a local supplier in Cape Town and opting for a more plant based menu plan which will reduce our Co2 footprint.
We are also reducing the footprint by installing new (and more efficient) solar panels on the yacht. These enable us to consume less diesel for the generator.
We are currently designing the worlds first truly net zero adventure sailing yacht - using brand new materials and technology. This yacht will be 90% lower environmental footprint across the full life-cycle compared to any other yachts afloat. The first yacht will be launched in 2025 and we will deploy one of these yachts on our St Helena trip as soon as possible.

LOCAL ECONOMYWe work with the St Helena tourism board very closely. We were the first operator to bring tourists to the island after Covid, giving a valuable lifeline to the small island community. We encourage our crews to spend time on the island and visit local attractions as well as working with local, independently run hotels to ensure whatever money we spend on the island, stays on the island and benefits the local community.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Guests : We believe in inclusive adventure and have created an "open oceans" fund to facilitate this. Open oceans gives fully funded places to people who would not otherwise have the means or confidence to join an ocean trip. For our St Helena voyage, we work with a London based charity who support young people from difficult backgrounds - Two of their students will join our St Helena trips.
We also work closely with St Helena government to give opportunity to the "Saints" (people born on the island). This includes 2 further Open Oceans places being made available to islanders who otherwise would not be able to join a sailing adventure. This gives them valuable experience.
