CARBON REDUCTION

For the longer journeys within the route, high-speed rail is used in place of domestic flights where a direct rail connection is available. Travelers take high-speed trains from Shenzhen to Yangshuo and from Yangshuo to Congjiang, linking the main destinations while avoiding the need for short-haul flights between them. High-speed rail also allows travelers to travel directly between city and regional railway stations, without the additional airport transfers required when flying.

For the rural sections of the journey, private vehicles are used where they are needed to reach villages, mountain areas and attractions that are not directly connected by rail. Once there, the itinerary includes several ways to explore the area without additional vehicle journeys, including countryside cycling and walking routes in Yangshuo and the hike from Zhaoxing to Tangan Village. The Li River journey between Yangdi and Xingping is operated by a fully electric bamboo raft, adding an electric-powered option to this part of the route.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The route gives travelers direct access to some of southern China’s distinctive natural landscapes. Around Yangshuo, the itinerary follows the Li River through karst scenery, rice paddies and rural farmland, with time spent both on the river and on foot. In Guizhou, the landscape changes to terraced fields, forested mountain areas, limestone scenery and waterfalls, including the natural trails around Huangguoshu Waterfall and the scenery of Huajiang Canyon.

These environments are experienced through walking, cycling, rafting and scenic viewing rather than through constructed wildlife attractions. The itinerary focuses on rivers, mountains, forests, farmland and traditional rural landscapes as part of the destination itself.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

The itinerary includes several experiences that bring travelers into contact with locally produced goods, small-scale accommodation and traditional crafts. In Yangshuo, the visit to a local market gives travelers the opportunity to see villagers selling fresh produce and handmade goods. In Zhaoxing Dong Village, accommodation is provided at a local boutique homestay, keeping part of the travel experience within the village itself.

Traditional craftsmanship is another important part of the route. In Kongbai Village, travelers meet local silver artisans, observe the making and finishing of Miao silver ornaments, and take part in a simple silver-shaping activity. At Shiqiao Village, they learn about handmade papermaking, from preparing tree bark pulp to the traditional manual production of paper.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Local people are directly involved in many of the experiences included in the itinerary, from guiding and village visits to traditional music, craft and cultural activities. The route includes opportunities to meet people who continue to practise local traditions, including Dong singers, Miao artisans and practitioners of traditional village customs.

The journey also reflects the cultural diversity of Guangxi and Guizhou through different communities and forms of heritage. Travelers encounter Dong villages with drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges and polyphonic singing, Miao communities with distinctive dress, ceremonies and silver craftsmanship, and the Tunbao traditions of Tianlong, including Dixi Opera and traditional mask-making. Rather than presenting these traditions only as historical displays, the itinerary introduces them through people, performances and practical demonstrations that remain connected to local communities.
