CARBON REDUCTION

Rail travel carries most of the long-distance movement in this itinerary, linking Beijing with Xi’an, Xi’an with Lanzhou, Jiuzhaigou with Chengdu, and Chengdu with Guilin by high-speed train. This allows a journey covering a large part of China to be made largely overland, without adding frequent domestic flights between the main cities.

The route also follows a natural progression from Beijing westward through the Silk Road and Tibetan Plateau regions before turning south to Chengdu and Guilin, rather than repeatedly crossing back over areas already visited. In the more remote plateau areas, road travel becomes part of the route itself, connecting places such as Xiahe, Langmusi, Ruoergai and Jiuzhaigou that are spread across a wide landscape.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The natural environments encountered on this journey range from the grasslands and mountain landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau to the forests, alpine lakes and mineral terraces of Sichuan. At Ganjia Secret Valley and around Ruoergai, travelers experience open grasslands, streams and mountain scenery, while the Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou areas offer particularly distinctive forest and water ecosystems. Jiuzhaigou National Park is also home to rare plants and animals, with its lakes, waterfalls and forests forming the central focus of the visit rather than intensive activities within the landscape.

In Chengdu, the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base provides a separate wildlife experience, where travelers observe giant pandas and red pandas in managed habitats and learn about ongoing conservation work. Together, these experiences focus on observing natural landscapes and wildlife in designated environments, without direct animal handling or feeding.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

Local commerce is woven into several of the rural stops along the route. In Yangshuo, the traditional Ganxu market brings together villagers from surrounding communities to trade fresh produce, household goods and handmade products, while time in West Street provides access to local cafés, shops and other small businesses. The journey through the plateau also passes through smaller settlements where local accommodation, restaurants and services form part of the travel experience. Rather than concentrating spending solely in major urban centres, the itinerary distributes some visitor activity across rural destinations and community markets along the route.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The journey introduces travelers to several communities whose traditions remain closely connected to their local environment and way of life. A visit with a Tibetan nomadic family in the highlands offers a direct perspective on pastoral traditions and everyday life, while Labrang Monastery and the monasteries of Langmusi introduce Tibetan Buddhist culture through its religious spaces, practices and local history.

The route also moves through different cultural regions, from the historic communities of Beijing and Xi’an to Tibetan areas of Gansu and Sichuan and the rural communities of Guangxi. Local guides, family hosts and cultural practitioners help bring these different perspectives into the journey, making local knowledge and cultural diversity an integral part of the experience.
