Fermina (Kythnos Hiking)

After successful tours on neighbouring Greek islands Kythnos and Serifos, we add Sifnos with its well-marked, clean, municipal-supported trails to historic sites, including Mycenae ruins, and sandy beaches. Sifnos is marginally higher than its neighbours rising to the Profitis Ilias monastery at 680 metres and this makes for one of the more demanding hikes. Fortunately the path is well laid and has good views. Less demanding routes include a walk on the first afternoon to Kastro, former capital of the island and Venetian in the last millenium. Serifos is a joy when you approach on the ferry from neighbouring island Kythnos. From the sea, along its coast you can see the 500-year old monastery and some of the villages you visit during the walks. Then comes the first view of the Hora, the island capital, and its white-washed buildings rising up the hillside past houses, little lanes and towards the churches on its peak. Quite stunning and with higher hills behind where you also walk during the trip. Among the Cycladic islands of Greece, the west Aegean island of Kythnos retains many of its former attributes. Its nature is untarnished by mass tourism. Naturalist David Koutsogiannopoulos says there are up to 500 species of wildlife on the island. Some of the ancient cedar forest remains while much of the flora includes rare endemic plants. On the island there are more than 140 species of birds, and about 30 live on the island throughout the year. Migratory birds visit March to May and September to October.
