1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Beyond doubt the most memorable and exciting part of the holiday was trekking Maliau Basin. Be warned this trek is not suitable for anybody who is not physically fit or has a fear of heights. Gayana Eco Resort is amazing, a wonderful resort to relax and unwind for a few days after being on the move non-stop.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you are trekking take only the minimum amount of kit and clothes, my son and I weighted our rucksacks in at around 14Kg including 2 litres of water. Use good footwear, we walked in US Army Jungle boots and thousand mile double layer summer socks. I am nearly 50 years old and have a weak knee, so trekking poles helped at some stages to take some of the weight. Good insect repellent is a must, plus consider preparing all you trekking clothes with permethrin. I was somewhat disappointed with Sepilok and would not consider going there again, I thought the Sun Bear rehabilitation reserve was more like glorified zoo. The Orang reserve was better and they seemed to make an effort to return animals back to the wild rainforest.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

One of my aims was to support the local economy and support conservation. I feel the holiday did give something back but honestly I would have gladly done more. For example we spent a little while planting sapling trees, which is all very well but the truth is that this barely touches the problem of deforestation in Borneo. The Sabah Foundation is trying to turn the tide but thousands of hectares are dedicated to palm oil rather than regeneration of rainforest.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would certainly like to return to Borneo and continue trekking in other areas, the Malaysian people are warm and welcoming. 10 out of 10.
