1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
How to choose! Wonderful walking and cross-country skiing with snow on the mountains and clear blue skies? Coming back every day to tea and cakes? Hot tub with beer in the afternoon/evening? New friends from three countries? Amazing hosts who make you feel at home immediately? Yoga in the studio with a mountain view? Or the incredible, restaurant quality food?2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
If you are hesitating because of the vegan evening meals - DON’T ! I am not even vegetarian, let alone vegan, and have never had such tasty and satisfying food for every single meal. The buffet style breakfast is just as delicious and includes dairy yoghurt/milk/cheese as well as eggs, for those who are not completely vegan. The hosts have also had the brainwave of supplying sandwich boxes and flasks so you can make your own picnic lunch from the choices on offer (breads, cheese, pickles, spreads, salads, fruit etc). There is also no need to worry about getting to MoaAlm - at first it seems like it will be a complicated train/bus journey from the airport, but Sophie will sort all the connections for you and Austrian transport runs like a dream, with simple changes and lovely views along the way.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - they use as much local food as possible (cheese, vegetables, jam, honey, apple juice…) and I understand local guides are used for more specialist activities.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Absolutely excellent! Perfect balance of activities, delicious food and time to relax.Alan Reimer review 29 Mar 2026

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Rodelling (sledging) down the snowy road from the accommodation through wooded areas and bendy turns as a lot of fun. I felt like a kid again.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The owners are dog friendly so check ahead if you have dog allergies. One guest brought her dog for the week. I was told they'd keep her away from me but she was brought into the lounge and dining area during the day and evenings.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I visited 2 local restaurants and a cafe whilst there. We also ate Vegan food during our stay, and our packed lunches didn't use cling film.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was great.Read the operator's response here:
Dear Camilla,
Thank you for writing us a review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at MoaAlm Mountain Retreat. We have dogs visiting us from time to time, and we are sorry that this affected your experience with us. We weren't aware that having a dog in the same room was a problem—we wish you had spoken to us directly. We also don't accept bookings with a dog if we know in advance that you cannot be together with dogs in one house. In case you would like to come back, please remind us of your allergy! We are glad that you were able to give us 5 stars despite this! It was lovely to meet you! Best wishes,
Sophie

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The welcome on arrival was particularly memorable. I shared the holiday with a lovely group of like-minded people.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
If you want to maximise the likelihood of good snow cover, I suggest booking for February / early March. The days are strenuous, but don't forget that the daily activities are not compulsory! A pair of warm cycling tights, preferably with crotch pad (precaution against falls on icy surfaces!) is highly recommended.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. The team buy as much local food and drink as they can and grow some of their own. The plant-based diet contributes well to reducing the effects of climate change. Transport is well-managed and efficient.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very good indeed. The team who run MoaAlm are not a family but do act like one! There was great attention to detail - for example binoculars were available in every bedroom. The combination of yoga (often quite strenuous!) followed by outdoor activities is a winner. The accommodation is clean, comfortable and very welcoming. Instructing is great - highly competent but recognising individual differences and no pressure to perform / turn up every day.Read the operator's response here:
Dear Tim,
Thank you very much for taking the time to write this helpful feedback.
It was pleasure to meet you and we are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us.
You didn't show that you found the activity so strenuous :) We had a lot of fun with you on the yoga mat, hiking and cross country skiing - and just as you say: we want everyone to choose their own level, pace, and breaks on holidays according to their own needs.
We had a white Christmas and it's supposed to snow a lot next week. But the blue sky during your week was also great!
We hope you made it home safely and we hope to see you again one day!
Happy new year from the MoaAlm family!
Sophie

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The unexpectedly icy road after one walk when the minibus slid into a drift. Members of the local community swiftly came to rescue of the minibus with grit etc while we walked down the road on our snow chains/spikes to be collected by other vehicles. We also enjoyed trying lots of different sorts of yoga.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Don't be put off by the vegan menu. Dinners and cakes were delicious. Breakfasts include cheese and eggs. Dairy milk is available eg for cereals, tea and coffee. You do need to be quite fit as the mountains are steep.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Food was seasonal and sourced locally wherever possible and we were taken to local restaurants. Vegan food is better for the environment. Food waste was minimised by serving small portions with additional bowls for those who wanted more. Staff ate any excess the next day. No toiletries provided in bathrooms avoiding waste of plastics.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very enjoyable week away and re-set. Would recommend to anyone who likes an active holiday. Staff were very friendly and helpful.Philippa Kershaw review 24 Feb 2024
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
So many things about the holiday were delightful, I find it hard to pick out one thing as a top memory, but overall, perhaps, the quiet majesty of the location, which I was lucky enough to see in sunshine and after a good snowfall.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
You'll get the most variety if you are pretty fit and follow their kit list closely. If you have doubts when you see the word vegan - put them out of your mind. I ate amazingly well.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Although there's no apparent employment of local people it's clear that Moa Alm fits in with the local community - eg: 'we're personally vegan but providing dairy products at breakfast supports our neighbouring farmers.' Free transfer from train station encourages train vs air travel. Owners and managers care about their local environment and are environmentally conscious generally while giving their guests a lovely experience. There's a hot tub using local trees as fuel. There's some driving to get places from the remote location (but we walked and sledded too!)4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A super winter break. The flexibility, expertise and unobtrusive hard work of the owners/managers/staff was wonderful. My only concern beforehand was that, having read so many positive reviews in advance, my expectations would be too high. No need to worry. I want to go back!Read the operator's response here:
