1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Some people say that globalization has made real travel impossible: all places are alike, mostly offering variations of consumerism. But this hike to Mount Athos is an awesomely different experience. It gives you the opportunity not only to observe but to participate in the orthodox monasteries rituals and practices. They are moving. Plus the medieval architecture and the Mediterranean landscapes (few cars or noises) round up a truly memorable experience. Nikos, our guide, was friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The hikes between the monasteries great. Don’t come for the food or the modern amenities but for a wonderful experience of nature and of a radically different time.2. Good walking shoes/boots. Own flip flops (monasteries did provide but they were well worn!). Take fruit snacks etc. Little shorts for going to the bathroom (shorts not allowed for walking)3.
