1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We spent 9 days travelling through Croatia and the highlight of our vacation was by far our time spent on the boat. Being guided by local host (Maya) on places to visits and travel tips was most enjoyable. Having the option to participate in as many activities (or as little) as we’d like was great for our group.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Book it! You won’t regret it.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes I feel that we were able to shop directly from local vendors who profited directly from us.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was wonderful and truly rememberable experience. 5/5.Emma Young review 30 Aug 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Just sailing and watching the world go by, then stopping in gorgeous little azure coves to get in the water, felt incredibly special. We also loved sharing the experience with new people. The Ston walls were stunning, the lake at Mljet was a brilliant experience and we also really enjoyed trying new things like e-bikes, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling etc.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be ready to get involved - with the many activities, with your group - and you will be really blown away by the beauty of Croatia.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
While I did feel that it excelled in terms of local community impact, I think improvements could be made on the environmental side. While sailing was generally a sustainable way to move around, it was a shame we couldn't recycle waste - I know that the islands don't have recycling facilities, but perhaps new bins with separators could be bought for the boat, so rubbish can be separated on board and then recycled when returning to base in Dubrovnik?4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Absolutely superb - we all loved it! We were so lucky with our group, who were truly lovely. Couldn't have asked for more (well, maybe some better vegetarian food options, but such is life!).John Cunningham review 25 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Swimming off the boat in beautiful blue water.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Definitely recommend it was fantastic. There is however v little hands on sailing, the skipper can sail single handed and we didn’t have much wind. Both Stefano and Maja were brilliant. Take lots of cash cards not accepted in most places.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We visited small family run restaurants on the island otherwise not much particular benefit.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Experience was brilliant in hind sight wished we booked a long trip. Use of SUP and swimming was our highlights - both Maja and Stefano v knowledgeable, helpful and keen to ensure we all had fun.Alison Milne review 14 Aug 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Jumping in the water with the paddle boards in beautiful places.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
There is a supermarket just before the meet point for water etc. Bring lots of cash for dinners on the islands- but there are dozens of ATMS on even the tiny islands.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I felt we supported local restaurants and shops. I would have liked to see recycling at every venue- not just in the national park.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Really a lovely couple of days we will remember always.Jo Male review 31 Jul 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Visit to Mljet national park and use of ebikes and visit to numerous beautiful coves for swimming.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Fantastic trip with great skipper and guide. Expensive as have to buy all meals other than breakfast but really worthwhile for a special trip.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think there was a benefit to local people through use of locally owned restaurants and eating one evening in a ladies house however no positive environmental or conservation impacts due to use of motor on boat.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Thoroughly enjoyed the trip - perfect for our family with grown up children.Andrew McDiarmid review 23 Jul 2022

It would have been nice to do our own thing in the evening at restaurants. Otherwise recommended! We got to see some beautiful islands and fantastic swimming spots.David Lacey review 6 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Being on the boat and having the beautiful views in every direction. The unbelievably crystal clear blue water. Stopping in idyllic coves for a swim and visiting the islands.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared to be flexible. It's not always clear that the published schedule may not happen as described. Sometimes the weather (mainly wind direction) means it's better to do activities in a different order. The crew are very laid back and sometimes it felt a little chaotic, for example we agreed and got ready to cycle with one guide and then we were told we were going out to swim with another. BUT we soon realised that these changes were always in our best interest it was far too hot to cycle and the guide got a small zodiac boat and took us out to a beautiful secluded cove with a shady beach to swim and relax. We cycled later in the evening when it was cool- much better! Go with the flow! We told them how much we enjoyed the big boat so they arranged for us to have an extra trip and drop us off on another island for lunch then returned to collect us. In summary my advice is make an extra effort to keep talking to the guides they are much more flexible and accommodating than you might realise. Once they know you like something then they really make an effort to do it for you but if you don't say anything they might assume you are just happy relaxing.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. We spoke to quite a few locals who spoke highly of the operator and how they use local guest houses and restaurants. I saw a flotilla come in one day in Suderad. About 8 yachts unloaded set up tables and took over the end of the quay where the local kids (and ours) were jumping in. They brought out their own food. They ate and drank wine then disappeared after a few hours. It struck me that this was exactly what our operator was working to avoid.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The trip was an amazing balance between relaxation and activity. We were able to explore every day but frequently just stopped and swam off the boat. The guides went above and beyond to keep us comfortable and to move at the pace our group wanted to move. Our kids went from being afraid to snorkel and jump off the boat, to us being unable to pull them out of the water when it was time to move on. It was amazing. The company was still not fully booked, so the boat met us almost every day and we got extra time to motor around the islands and visit new snorkelling and swimming spots.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
We were slightly disappointed in the accommodations in Sipan Island. It wasn't bad but manage your expectations. The rooms were spartan, and our AC didn't work but they were clean and the bed was comfortable. We stayed in a number of 3*** rooms in Croatia during our trip, and this one was by far the most basic. You're on a rural and rustic, but beautiful and charming island, so it didn't negatively impact our trip. A lot of restaurants and hotels didn't open due to COVID, and it's unclear if the guest house we stayed in was their usual one or an alternative. Also-no one takes credit cards, plan on paying almost everything in cash (except the national park fees). We ended up needing to withdraw cash a lot more frequently than we expected. Also, our youngest is 8 and we really had to watch closely as we were sailing. He followed safety instructions, but they need eyes on them as they're walking around the boat.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I saw the crew regularly doing beach clean ups as we stopped to swim, which was great incentive to join along. And we were always steered towards locally owned and family run restaurants, which I loved.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A thousand stars! I'm really looking forward to going back to Croatia and doing more trips with this operator. Since we went to Split after the tour, in hindsight, I wish we had done the Dubrovnik to Hvar sail. It would have made for a better itinerary (and less time driving), but that is just another plan for another vacation!Read the operator's response here:
Hi Teresa,
As for the accommodation standard, please note that for this particular trip we state that the boat is 4**** accommodation and that on Sipan we use 3***
guesthouse accommodation. The accommodation you had has been categorized as three stars by the local government office which has to follow national guidelines. However, it is entirely possible that standards in Croatia/Europe are different than standards and requirements for three stars in the US.
Thank you again for taking the time and leaving this useful feedback. Please contact us if you wish to clear the issue with the accommodation for the guides.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
This was a wonderfully relaxing holiday and we loved all of it. Swimming and paddle boarding off the boat in secluded bays was great and we enjoyed the islands we visited and food we ate. We would do it all again! A special mention to our skipper Dino who was very attentive to our needs.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Just book it. You won’t be disappointed. We booked a twin cabin for our daughters which was really a double and an extra single sleeping area. We thought this would give them more space and privacy but the configuration didn’t quite work. Also we spent so little time in the bedrooms that space wasn’t really an issue - a double would have been fine. There is quite a lot of storage space when you unpack but bring soft luggage - there is no space for suitcases.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We ate at local restaurants and staff were all local. The skipper and guide picked up litter from the sea.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We spent 12 nights in Croatia in total (Split, yacht and Dubrovnik). The time we spent on the yacht and visiting far less touristy places was by far the highlight of our holiday.Jennylynn Fraser review 7 Oct 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Clearly our guide and skipper knew the area well. The coastline was stunningly beautiful and the coves and places we anchored to swim etc...were picture postcard beautiful. Additionally the restaurants chosen for meals were typical of the region and great food. The activities just right.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Don't expect 5 star accomodation on board. The accomodation is spartan; rightly so for this type of trip. Take a change of swimsuits, some of us we're in the water swimming at 6am!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, we spent our time anchored in small villages. We biked, hiked and swam and conscious of making sure the area remains unspoilt.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our crew took us to local families to eat, great for us to experience true Croatian cuisine & support the island people. Our crew were very aware of environment impacts affecting their seas, Croatia is a clean country & the seas are remarkably free of plastic. When we stopped in one of the bays it had litter that had washed up so we got bags & collected all the plastic washup with the crew.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The beautiful sunsets on each of the islands, as well as the thrill of sailing/motoring in such a lovely setting. We enjoyed seeing the different style of life on each island. Meeting local people and eating delicious, fresh grilled fish at local restaurants was also a highlight. And the guide, Darija, and skipper, Ollie, were wonderful: patient, funny, engaging, and professional. They were flexible as the weather changed and definitely took into account the interests and abilities of our group.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Pack light! The catamaran cabins have ample cubbies/drawers for storage, but not much room for a suitcase, so a duffle bag is preferable. Remember sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses, and of course a bathing suit.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Sitting with the family at the bow of the catamaran with the sails up, watching the beautiful scenery and feeling the sea spray. Also, learning to paddle board in a gorgeous, quiet and calm cove.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Bear in mind the cabins and bunks are quite small and cozy! Don’t take big luggage on board. You don’t need much anyway.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
This we weren’t too sure about. We had one meal at a family’s home which the guide spoke very highly of. We were quite disappointed with it, it wasn’t great food and was expensive for what you got. Compared to the family prepared meal we had with another operator last year which was amazing, this was quite poor. We were also disappointed with the little amount of sailing we did. We had to take the skippers word for it tryst conditions weren’t right, but we’d like to have used the engine less.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We were particularly impressed with the skipper, Luka and guide, Bojan’s energy and attitude. They were great guys and both were amazing with our son, who has Autism. As a result our holiday was made all the more enjoyable and our sons had a blast.Amy Paterson review 10 Jun 2019

Our main meals were at local restaurants or homes of residents. We do not feel the trip had any effects on conservation or any significant impact on reducing the effect on the environment.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was an enjoyable and fun holiday. We appreciated that the cruise had only 5 instead of 9 guests; 9 guests would have been too crowded.Eimear Schwartz review 1 Sep 2019

Great guides...varied swimming spots...clear waters...good bikes. Good company. Need better snorkling equipment. Fresh squeezed orange juice would have been a basic but a nice (and easy) touch. Even an orange and basic juicer would have sufficed. A toaster is essential on a sailing boat..for the Irish ??2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Great boats.. bikes and guides. Love Croatia...and the islandsRead the operator's response here:
We do stand by our social and environmental responsibility policies. The accommodations we use on islands you visited are traditional houses rented from locals. We avoid large, foreign owned hotels During your sailing trip with us you had the opportunity to have several meals at local, off the beaten path restaurants and even with local families who prepare meals only for our guests.
The activities we offer on our trips – sea kayaking, SUP, hiking and cycling – are human powered. We do not encourage or offer use of jet skis or speed boats for water activities, which are otherwise, unfortunately, common in the area. We use sails as much as possible if the wind and weather allow.
The power grid on our boats does not allow use of toasters or other appliances. We do provide fresh bread, baked locally and purchased daily from small, local stores.

Get out of your comfort zone! Although there was a loose itinerary, our skipper Zeljko went off-piste at every opportunity which helped to make this a truly magical experience. We did things we never thought we were capable of and couldn't have had a better time; paddle-boarding, cave diving, sea kayaking, swimming and snorkelling.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It was a total 'win win' putting money back into the island communities. Authentic villages and sensational food at local, friendly, family run restaurants. Eating fish pulled from the sea just hours earlier and eating salads where the ingredients were picked from the restaurant garden to order!!! Zero carbon footprint, of course that satisfied our eco and ethical conscience, but as a pure dining experience it really couldn't have been better.4. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The sailing and swimming every day was fantastic but Mljet was our favourite island and in particular the cycle trip to the national park on Mljet where we visited the salt lakes and stopped for a drink and ice cream at the monastery on an island in the middle of the lake. Its a 20km round trip and was pretty steep in parts but fairly easily accessible for anyone who can cycle. Going in the late afternoon and returning as the sun set created some fantastic photographic opportunities and we felt we had earned our dinner.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Pack light and bring easily dried clothes. Every morning there is an opportunity to swim and/or paddle board after breakfast. In the afternoon there are activities such as the cycle ride or walking the walls at Ston, make the best of the opportunity to experience Croatia in a different way. Its also a great opportunity to meet new people on board including the great guides and skippers. We had two teenage sons who enjoyed the activities and the down time (WiFi on the boat helped) and enjoyed meeting and speaking to new people from around the world who were also on the trip.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The guide ensured that we had a fun history of the places we visited and we ate at selected local restaurants which supported the local community - much of the food and drink was sourced locally - fresh fish, oysters, mussels and locally produced wine.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a fantastic experience, the catamaran was more modern, spacious and comfortable than we expected. The skipper and guide were always gracious, helpful and full on interesting stories and anecdotes about the history - ancient and recent - of Croatia. The company were fantastic, our plane was late and we need to make a ferry to meet up with the catamaran so they came and picked us up from the airport free of charge to make sure we made the ferry (just by a couple of minutes) and avoid a stressful start to our holiday. Overall we had a fantastic time.Christine Kubota review 25 Jul 2018

Hi Anthea
We're glad you enjoyed the holiday!
Our goal is to make this holiday and its activities environmentally responsible through human powered activities – we do not offer jet skis, parasailing,
quads or similar activities which would require the use of engine power. We also sail whenever the wind allows it.
The restaurants we recommend for this trip are locally owned. We even visit a few families who cook especially for our guests and by doing that we bring
them much needed income. Our company has a policy of not taking from them for these services, so any and all money spent there goes to the families.

We ate at local select restaurants off the beaten track so it did feel like we were benefiting local people. When kayaking we were encouraged to pick up litter from remote beaches with an eco bag, however this was made of plastic and the rubbish we collected just went into a bin. We felt more could be done to recycle rubbish in general as we saw most rubbish on the boat was disposed of in just one bin.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We encountered a number of issues during our 4 days. From being told we were not able to have the snacks on board because dinner was in 1 hour, running out of gas 2 out of 4 mornings so there was not hot water for coffee or tea in the morning, not having bins in bathrooms cleaned out. Dear Greg,
We are glad to hear you liked your holiday and many thanks for taking time to write the review.
Even though it is very hard to avoid any kind of motorized vehicles today, we still tried to do that by investing in to catamarans and sailboats that use wind power rather than speed boats, motor yachts or ski jets. Of course it happens that the wind is not strong enough to get your from one point to another so we have to use motors. Besides our company has since its first days used human powered activities such as rafting, biking, kayaking, SUP and today sailing.
We will however encourage our crew to sail as much as possible.
Kind regards,

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The whole trip was memorable but the special part I remember most fondly is riding up to a remote farmhouse for lunch on one of the islands with our fantastic guide - Stefano. Greeted by an energetic friendly dog and a lovely couple who rely mostly on their own produce and a kilometre walk to the nearest road. Lunch was home made bread fresh from the oven, home cured prosciutto, home grown tomatoes and olive oil, washed down with their local red. Coffee was offered after and I dared asked about the possibility of milk.... 'hmm yes, is goats milk ok?' was translated from Croatian into English. How could I say no! He then went out to the barn, cornered the goat and served me warm milk in a little jug. The best coffee I have had in a long time, thank you! Spending 4 days aboard and sailing around the islands, often feeling you were the only ones there, in the capable hands of our captain - Patrick and swimming into a cave just like the Blue Grotto. Most memorable, hard to pick!!!!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Don't think about it any more, just book it! I would go again. Pack light, don't take too many clothes, swimmers and a hat and ohh mosquito repellant for the evenings. Travel towel was used too to keep bath towel salt free. As we were travelling for a month there was still plenty of room for our suitcases under the bed. There were plenty of opportunities to buy extra snacks and wine, ATM's were available also during the trip. If you are from Australia take some vegemite, everyone was curious. We travelled with our teenage daughter who enjoyed the energy levels of activities and fellow travellers.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The local communities benefited from us eating at their family run restaurants, using locals who knew the area so well not only for sailing but on land also. Fresh produce was bought daily at local shops for breakfast which was fresh and tasty, served on board and presented beautifully each morning. There was recycling facilities on board, use of non motorised equipment - sail power some of the time, mountain bikes, sea kayaks reduced our impact to the environment dramatically compared to the big cruise ships or party boats.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This holiday was amazing! From our first point of contact of enquiry through to pre trip accommodation in Dubrovnik, to the trip itself and drop off back at the airport. Attention to detail, timing, allergy requests, sharing of meals with other travellers and crew, encouraging us to go a little further - "it's not far" was definitely worth it. The highlight of our month in Europe. Worth every cent, or should I say Kuna. 10+/10Monique Linder review 3 Jun 2015

Take drinking water with you (or buy from shops when you stop) as there is none on the boat. Also there is little fridge space, as you are sharing the small fridge with the crew and other passengers. Most of the islands only take cash. Be prepared for the travel agenda not to work as planned as you have to respect the skipper as to where the weather will allow you to travel to. Allow the crew to suggest where to go as all their suggestions for food were very good. You may be sharing the boat with up to 8 other people so you need to be sociable.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes to a degree. We had less sailing than we expected and therefore used the engine more than we would have liked but that was partly because of the poor weather. We visited smaller less touristy resorts so helped the tourism here and definately benefitted local people. The boat had a plastic bottle recycling bin on it!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
An amazing experience. I am not a sailor and am not confident on boats but I went outside my comfort zone and thoroughly enjoyed it. You are sailing for between 1 1/2 and 4 hours max in a day and the skipper was very good and would not (and did not) go out to sea when the weather was bad. We had 5 teenagers (age 13 to 19) with us. The girls sunbathed and swam, the boys snorkelled and paddle boarded and kayaked whenever we stopped. Personally I would not suggest this for much younger children as they could be bored when sailing. Our guys all had great fun and will remember this for a long timeDavid Dunhill review 26 Sep 2013

Yes, we often ate with local families and the food was amazing - very fresh (just from the garden or sea), wonderfully cooked and often with wine that they had grown in their own vineyards. It was great to see local families benefiting directly from our tour. In addition, our captain was very knowledgable about the local business practices so often steered us to the more responsible vendors.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
The holiday was so much better than I expected, the weather was certainly on our side but there was so much to do and see and all the equipment was provided so there was plenty of choice. If we wanted to go cycling instead of sea kayaking, it was so easy to change, this meant the holiday was much relaxed and felt more personal than having to conform to the needs of a wider group.Richard Burgess-Gamble review 23 Jun 2013

Dear Perny,
We're glad to hear you overall enjoyed your trip. However we would like to comment on the fact you did not feel there was a benefit from this holiday to the local community, or that it was environmentally responsible.
You mentioned that you had great dinners while on this trip. I'm sure you noticed that these dinners were organized with local families in their restaurants. We run this trip in an area where there are more an more large hotel chains opening every day. We choose to work with the small restaurants and private accommodations rather than these large hotels because we want to support local businesses. We bring guests to their restaurants twice every week. Your holiday with us directly contributed to them being able to stay in business and do what they chose to do, rather than being forced to leave their small towns and work at large hotels as maids, waiters and chefs.
As for the environmental impact, you wrote you enjoyed cycling, paddle boarding, kayaking and being on the catamaran. Our company chose to promote these activities, rather than for example jet skis, quads or motor yachts exactly because of their low impact on the environment. This has been our philosophy for more than 20 years.
Your last night in Zaton Bay - the accommodation is also owned and run by a local family, as are the four restaurants which are within a 15 minute walking distance from the B&B where you were staying.
I hope this helps clarify our policy and philosophy when it comes to responsibility towards both the local community and environment.
Holiday Reviews
You can trust Responsible Travel reviews because, unlike many other schemes, reviews can ONLY be written by people who we have verified have been on the holidays. In addition, we don't run these holidays ourselves - our only interest is giving you the best independent advice.
