1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing Pilot Whales and visiting Canna

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The single en-suite cabin is very small, the shower is hand held only. I would not recommend it to anyone who is less physically able than usual, or above average height and weight.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I hope it benefitted local people. By reporting sightings to Whale and Dolphin research I hope we were also supporting conservation. The boat crew were very conscious of our impact on local wild life, taking steps to ensure that we did not disturb seals or other marine life unnecessarily.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

9/10. I had an unfortunate illness at the start of the holiday which impacted on my ability to enjoy some aspects of the trip, however that was not the fault of the crew and they were extremely supportive through my time on board.

review 12 Aug 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Being in open sea with nothing to obscure the horizon and dolphins swimming alongside the boat.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take travel sickness tablets if on a long trip and unused to sailing. Have a good pair of binoculars.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We spent money in local shops and walked around islands so not damaging the environment. Minimal environmental impact in a small boat as opposed to cruising in a large ferry.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was stunning. A life changing experience of the importance of conserving our astonishing wildlife, from jelly fish to sea eagles.

review 30 Sep 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Helping to winch in the anchor! That's why we brought our sailing gloves! And seeing pod after pod of dolphins.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get the deluxe cabin, bring warm clothes and good walking shoes, and enjoy the peace and majesty of Scotland.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We didn't t st or interact with local people, other than at Duart Castle (when the admission fee was paid for by the boat owners). We assume the owners followed waste disposal regulations during the trip. Unsure how any aspect of the trip supported local conservation efforts. Perhaps information about these issues, if relevant, could be shared between the operators and passengers.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Read the operator's response here:

Depending on the cruise's itinerary or on what the passengers wish to do, there will sometimes be less opportunities for you to interact with local people. Whenever possible we encourage our guests to visit locally important heritage sites, visit local gardens, craft shops and participate in cultural events. We also work with local wildlife rangers and tour guides. Tourism is increasingly a vital part of the income for the local residents of this somewhat remote, isolated but beautiful region of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. We are shopping locally before the cruise (vegans are catered for), trying to use seasonal and locally produced food for the duration of the cruise (we buy items with minimal packaging). Often we buy more during the cruise from the little shops found during the journey in villages and towns on the islands we visit. We only employ the services of the local marina, shops, services, restaurants and guides. These suppliers all employ local staff. We are very precise and strict with our recycling protocol. All waste is sorted out during the cruise, stored and taken back to our base where cans, tins, glass bottles, cardboard and plastic are recycled. As part of our low carbon policy: We ask guests to bring their own water bottles which we refill. We do not use straws, plastic cutlery/plates, drink stirrers, mini butter/jam packets. Engine revolutions are kept to a minimum to reduce fuel consumption. We do not travel at night as we anchor in secluded in anchorages and in two of our vessels the fuel consuming generators are switched off to give quiet ships. On St Hilda, where possible, we set the sails. All fuel usage is recorded so that fuel consumption can be tightly monitored. Bed linen and towels are not changed daily. We do not use imported flowers. We use low energy LEDs where possible. Our company depends largely on the internet and word of mouth for marketing to reduce paper waste.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The two trips were lovely, food very good on both.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

With these two trips in Scotland, be prepared for rain and cool weather.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not necessarily but it certainly did not contribute negatively.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I am a very seasoned solo world traveler so it is extremely difficult for me to answer this question. Everyone at Responsible Travel was lovely, curteous and helpful. That is very important to me. I think the variety of trips you offer is wonderful as well as them being conscious of our planet. My four star rating does not mean there was anything wrong with the trip, as there wasn't. I was disappointed with the lack of wildlife not seen on the St Hilda but that is up to Mother Nature. I think you are all doing a wonderful job .

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Having a seal follow us (at a respectable distance) whilst out zodiac went ashore. He or she was so cheeky. Watching an otter fishing was also good. So was the whisky tasting.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Remember to take your wet weather gear (top and trousers) as well as two pairs of shoes - one for ashore (short gumboots are good) and soft pair for on the ketch. Be prepared for climbing in and out of dinghy and up and down companionway stairs.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We helped several local whisky distilleries!!! Shopping was done locally. We used sail to supplement diesel.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The cruise fulfilled my expectations of wildlife and whisky. Despite being unwell I still had a great time and the crew were superb. Fellow passengers made it a great time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Several things actually eg being able to join a sailing/motorised vessel and helping the skipper with the anchor and sea boat; seeing the beautiful Scottish landscape from a different perspective; visiting some quiet lochs and castles, eating delicicious meals cooked on board by an excellent chef; socialising with people from different places and countries.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The living space is a cosy but sociable space; don't take too much luggage as storage is limited; take lots of layers - the weather is unpredictable.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly felt that any money we spent benefited local businesses

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We loved it, quite different from our usual sort of holiday. We were well looked after.

review 4 Oct 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Life aboard an authentic, well-looked after and wonderful small ship! Seeing plenty of wildlife and plotting our navigation routes each evening and morning before travelling throughout the Hebrides!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This was an absolutely fantastic experience in the Hebrides. Both on-shore and at-sea staff were highly professional and friendly, this is a family-owned and operated business and the pride they take in their work is evident. Words don't do justice to the incredible scenery and the wildlife that we saw, the crew were very knowledgable about the areas we travelled to and provided plenty of ideas for on-shore explorations at our anchor spots, and the catering on-board was brilliant.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

This company is a family business and therefore we were sure that our trip cost was benefitting the local economy. We were also able to visit different areas within the Hebrides and this allowed us to contribute to the local economies in these places. We learned a great deal about the local environment and conservation initiatives that have been implemented whilst on our trip! The trip itself seemed to have very little environmental impact, the crew seemed conscious and caring about the local environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Top marks, it was wonderful and we plan to return and use this cruising company again.

review 28 Aug 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many, landing on Staffa and visiting Fingal's Cave on our own has to be one, the food and dolphins swimming alongside the boat are up there too.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for all weathers, it changes constantly.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes people employed in tourism and boating as well as some local shops

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great. The company Sea Adventures logo is definitely deserved but we always felt safe!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking along the "lochs" was the highlight of the trip. On board they have very good and safe kayaks and lifejackets, all you need to go exploring the wildlife. I and my 10 year old daughter saw many seals, they are curious and they follow the kayaks, it's amazing!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We did not see any puffins or whales, check if the season is right, if you expect to see them. Bring waterproof trousers for kayaking.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Since I booked the trip through Responsible travel, I expected to eat much more fresh food, especially fish from local fishermen. Actually we were offered a lot of industrial food full of sugar and additives, especially for breakfast and as a dessert for lunch. I do believe that it is not easy to cook on board, nevertheless the kitchen is big and fully equipped. During the tour of the islands I saw organic gardens, locally handmade bread but not any of this kind of fresh food was served. It was very disappointing. We fished for mackerel and crab and they were well cooked and served a couple of times. Once I met firshermen while kayaking and we got prawns from them, we had to pay an extra charge! I don't have to explain here how food is an important issue for local community, our health and planet's health; with our choice we can decide if sustain small local producers or the big corporations. So I really don't understand this kind of choice for the menu on board.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Beautiful spots, amazing walks and kayaking in nature; comfy and safe boat, bad menu on board.

Read the operator's response here:

We like to offer our guests a good choice of breakfast cereals and porridge, followed by toast, preserves, honey, perhaps a boiled egg, scrambled eggs, pancakes or occasionally a bacon roll as a treat. This is always complimented by fresh fruit and yoghurt. Our chef often serves freshly baked bread for lunch and home made cakes for afternoon tea. We cannot be sure of where we shall stop during the cruise because of the weather and our chef stocks up before the cruise from the local shops in Oban, buying Scottish meat and fish. We are sometimes meeting some fishing boats and are offered fish, prawns or scallops to buy which is always a pleasure. I can think of only one organic garden offering fresh vegetables to buy. As our chef has usually already bought the necessary supply for the cruise, buying more during the cruise could result in a waste of food which is something against our ethos. Vegetables and fruits are good when fresh and don't keep that way for very long. I am glad that, as it is often the case during a cruise, you were able to catch some mackerels and crab. There is nothing quite as delicious as mackerels cooked immediately after being caught. I am so pleased that you felt safe and comfortable aboard our vessel and enjoyed using our new kayaks. We always recommend that you bring some light water-proof jacket and trousers to use when kayaking and also in the dinghy when going exploring or going ashore. Even in good weather, they will protect you from the sea spray and wind and keep you warm. I would like to thank you for giving us 4 stars and hope that you and your daughter will join us again for another Hebridean adventure.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Not sure.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

50% chance of bad weather so experience is very different if it's wet. If it's wet or windy you go wherever the captain thinks is safe. May be totally different to what's planned. Inside of boat will be crowded if it's wet and cold if there are 11 people.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, but most tourism does. Don't think it reduced environmental impact. Not sure how it supports conservation but clearly ethos is respectful towards it

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Disappointed, sadly. Information assures abundance of 'extraordinary' unusual wildlife 'everywhere', but this is not so in September. This claim should be modified. In total we saw seals, cormorants, deer, wild goats, gannets, and once glimpsed an eagle very high up. The route travelled in no way resembled the planned route, which is understandable given the weather conditions, but it should be made clear how often this happens over the season. The trip says 11 or 12 can be accommodated but it was full enough with 6 passengers when we were often indoors because of the weather. The decor was a little dowdy. The captain, bosun and cook were all great though - friendly, caring towards everyone, attentive, great humour, skilled, and the cooking and 'service' were excellent.

Read the operator's response here:

Our vessel is very spacious and has a central heating to keep our eight passengers pleasant, warm and dry in their cabins and in the saloon which are traditional for a vessel of that age and pedigree. It says on our website: "Please note that your voyage is weather dependent. Weather doesn't just mean good or bad weather. There are many considerations such as tidal gates, wind direction and strength, the strength and direction of currents, overfalls, and fetch." Your safety and comfort is paramount and our skippers will choose the best routes and anchorages with this in mind. We are shopping locally before the cruise and occasionally buy fish and prawns or scallops from local fishermen en route. We employ people from the area where we are based. We bring ashore all rubbish, recycling all that we can. We also have a very strict “look and leave alone” approach for our holidays, with regards to the wildlife and marine ecosystem. Throughout the trip our “leave only a wake “ policy is reinforced by the skipper and crew. Of course, come October, some of the migrating seabirds are on their way. The puffins leave as early as mid-August. We are traveling in one of the most famous area in Scotland to be able to see cetaceans, basking sharks and orcas. These wonderful sea animals are constantly on the move and we are sometimes less lucky. However we are glad that you saw seals, cormorants, deer, wild goats, gannets, and even an eagle. We would like to thank you for the lovely comments you left in our guest book: " Thanks for a great Hebridean trip, despite the weather. Thanks for great care, food and fun. "

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our encounter with a big group of white-beaked dolphins jumping playfully and the beautiful beaches and peaks of the islands. Barra and Canna were amazing and the red sunset in Muck was unforgettable.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be well prepared for all types of weather. Try to participate as much as possible to the life on board. Be fit and adventurous. For couples, try to book the aft cabin if possible.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We tried to buy locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We thoroughly enjoyed it

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience was wonderful, particularly enjoyed the dinghy trip round the Burnt Islands reserve where we were treated with great views of the Common Seal colony. Also enjoyed discovering another world through the microscope investigating plankton samples.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take ear plugs, your shipmates may snore ! Be prepared to get involved with sailing procedures if the opportunity is there, it will increase your understanding and enjoyment of the trip. Make the most of the wildlife viewing,(including plankton !). Don't expect to lose weight, Colette produces wonderful meals and and is disappointed if it doesn't get eaten ;-).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Provisions are bought locally and consideration is given to buying as much ethical produce as possible. Michael is very involved with marine research and the effect of climate change on the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A wonderful week, stunning scenery, lots of wildlife to observe. Michael and Colette are so friendly and have a vast amount of knowledge and experience in so many subjects, immense patience teaching beginners how to tie knots, hoist sails and raise the anchor and just making sure everyone is comfortable and happy. At times my sides were aching with laughter with endless funny stories from the crew and other guests.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life with the beautiful scenery of lochs and surrounding mountains together with wildlife sightings (especially common seals and a variety of birds). Michael taught us some basic yachting skills (such as knot tying, putting sails up, dropping and lifting the anchor) and Colette supplied us with plenty of lovely food and drink - she never stops! No light polution and clear skies allowed for spectacular stargazing. As an added bonus we got to collect and view plankton under the microscope, a truly unique experience. Thank you very much Michael and Colette for your hospitality and making this a memorable and enjoyable holiday.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This holiday is great for getting away from it all. Travellers should also be aware that the 6-berth sleepng area is shared with only a curtain separating the 2 rear bunks from the other 4 bunks. Privacy, therefore, is limited.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

This holiday supports conservation, particularly sustainable fishing and minimising human impact on wildlife.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent: great hospitality and plenty of fascintating things to see and do.

review 8 Jul 2016

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing an Osprey catch a fish.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take Mike and Colette's advice on clothing!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Increased our awareness of the interplay and delicate balance between various species of flora and fauna - in particular, plankton.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great holiday despite some truly awful unseasonal weather. Wonderful wildlife and scenery - especially Loch Striven (when the winds abated). Mike is hugely knowledgeable about sailing and wildlife - and a lot of other things besides. Colette is an excellent cook, who managed to cater for my daughters manifold food intolerances. Both hosts made us feel very welcome. We are contemplating another trip next year.

review 27 Jun 2016

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Joining as a passenger and becoming part of a crew was a memorable experience on the St Hilda. Being hosted by such committed, patient and experienced owners made the transition a pleasure. I knew the coast we visited from a landward perspective, and was thrilled to achieve a long held desire to explore it from the sea. Learning to handle the gear, and to participate in the marine explorations, from mammals to microbes, was fascinating. We became a real 'crew' - shipmates.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for a simple life on board, well organised though confined. Put yourself into learning mode, with a team (crew) spirit. The weather, good or bad, will enhance the experience. Only pack essentials - it's amazing what you can do without! You wont need five changes of clothes. It's a good opportunity to try things new, even the porridge (with a touch of salt!), it is Scotland after all.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We enjoyed the cruise so much we were never ashore to meet the locals apart from boarding and disembarking. We were certainly made dramatically aware of many environmental issues through being drawn to observe and be concerned for all that was happening in the marine habitat we visited, and by taking part in the research work undertaken on plankton, and noting the effects of climate change

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

As a reasonably fit, far-travelled 87 year-old, I couldn't have had a more enjoyable and memorable holiday. I felt appreciated in my attempts to be useful, and similarly appreciated the endeavours and friendship of all those who formed our crew under the expert care of the skipper and his mate.

review 9 Sep 2015

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A very interesting experience for people who loves nature, sea and peace.

review 13 Jul 2015

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The day we went sailing. Michael took his time with teaching his very novice passengers how to sail.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring games or hobbies to enjoy when not busy on the boat, especially young passengers, since wifi is not available.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we went to the sculpture garden and ate at the local pub. We hiked up a mountain and enjoyed nature. The scenery was beautiful.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great family experience, wish the weather was better, overall seven out of ten. Michael and Colette are wonderful hosts and very patient with teaching us. We enjoyed their company.

review 24 Sep 2014

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Close encounters with the wildlife. Hauling in the lobster pot and finding an enormous lobster and ten crabs!. Fishing for mackerel over the side and catching biggest fish of the day then eating them later. Launching the dinghy and seeing the seals and birds close-up .

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to muck in and experience everything on offer. Being a working boat there are potential hazards and getting in and out of the dinghy involves good co-ordination so think carefully if you have limited mobility. Take everything that the website suggests- you will need it all!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, both Michael and Colette were passionate about conservation matters and the threat to the marine environment which couldn't help but rub off on everyone on board.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant holiday

review 7 Jun 2014

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Great hosts and fellow travellers, stunning scenery and wonderful food, on and off the boat

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Relax and drink it all in, you couldn't get better hosts

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Eating at local restaurants and other shopping helps the locals, and of course, wind in the sails is helpful too.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

10/10, relaxing and rewarding

review 11 Jun 2014

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The wonderful scenery and the good food on and off the boat, a scarcity of the infamous midge, favourable weather and our hosts recommendations on where to go and what to do etc prevented a few family feuds. I would also like to mention (and thank) our knowledgeable taxi drivers (George and Keiran)who taxied us here and there for a few days

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

WE spent rather a lot of time off the boat owing to an unfortunate mishap with the skipper. We therefore got to see and do some things that may not have been possible had we spent more time sailing. Both Michael and Colette are very accommodating so I would suggest negotiating a fair bit of time ashore.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The food and beer was predominantly local. Visits to local art exhibitions, nature reserves, historic buildings etc was a contribution to the local economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

My family and I enjoyed it very much

review 19 Sep 2013

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many that I can’t pick an individual moment but those I recommend to others include:- Good company, fresh air, viewing the Milky Way above with spectacular phosphorescence below, laughter – who knew tying knots could be such good fun, complete trust in the seamanship of the skipper, delicious and wholesome food, meticulous cleanliness, being involved in deciding each day’s activities. Common seals, lobsters, mackerel, harbour porpoise, lots of birds (recommend this trip to those who know about birds-unfortunately I don’t). Relaxation and regeneration.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Join in, enjoy the moment, wear layers – my personal favourite is a woolly hat. I traveled solo and felt comfortable from the outset; sharing a cabin was all part of the experience.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Involvement with local business was evident – Gary is the best dressed Taxi driver in the world, Collette shops with local suppliers, ask the skipper about the benefits of line caught vs trawling for fish and have a look at msc.org

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Wonderful holiday and great value for money. I'm considering running away to sea!

review 17 Sep 2013

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part of my time on St. Hilda was the amazing spectacular scenery of Scotland, the sea lochs, seals, birds, jelly fish and the warm welcome. The knowledge and expertise of Colette and Michael on the whole trip. The lovely food, Colette is a great cook, but very modest! The being at sea. Sleeping in a Bunk, hearing the sound of the wind and waves, feeling warm and cosey!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Enjoy every minuet, this is an experience you may never have again. Make the most of the view, looking at whats around you. Take warm and waterproof clothing, layers are the best. Walking shoes and deck shoes, as advised. Do not be afraid of wind and rain or to ask, you are in very safe hands. Join in its fun! Have a good laugh enjoy the excellent cooking, food and company on this lovely boat.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, I felt as though I had had my eyes opened by Michael and Colette about whats really important in the world! The environment, the animals, fish and birds of this area are all really important to them, and they do their best for the local economy, the passion shines through, and then enthuses you.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was a great holiday for me, made me fall in love with sailing again, oh dear!
