Reviews for Cairo short break, Egypt

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our first day out to see the Great Pyramids. Not much else can beat seeing the pyramids!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

In retrospect, with the limited amount of time we had, we could have done without the day option to Alexandria (3 hour drive there and back for a total of 6 hours in a car felt like a day wasted). However, if you like seafood, then the food at the restaurant by the water that we ate at was a bit worthy of the day trip. Also in retrospect, we wished we had known to request more time to shop around in the bazaars we visited. I could have easily spent half a day at Khan El Khalili. Also, before you leave, ask your tour rep if they plan to take you to any local shops so you can be prepared to bring enough cash or your credit card with you. There was a carpet workshop we didnít know we would be taken to and were a bit unprepared for financially. Haggling is most welcomed though! Also be prepared to have small change on you at all times (1 to 5 Egyptian pounds in coins). Tipping is wide-spread.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Our tour guide told us about some local workshops and stores to see if we were Interested in visiting (Papyrus Institute, local jewelry store in Giza, carpet workshop in Memphis). I felt these visits benefited local businesses that are currently hurting because of how the civil unrest is affecting the tourism industry. We also ate at restaurants locally owned and operated. This was nice as we would even get to see some local women making the traditional breads and dishes we were served.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was an excellently planned holiday. The tour company are professionals. I did feel that I didn't properly account for the time that would be spent in traffic traveling from Giza, where our hotel was located, to Cairo and back. The driving around really cut into our time. My travel companions and I would have like to have had more free time. In retrospect, we could have also told our tour guide that we wanted to spend more time at the bazaar for example and less time at some historical sites. But all in all, our trip was completely incident-free. The tour company made us feels safe. I should mention again that it is pretty obvious that Egyptís tourism industry is hurting as we were the only foreigners in many places we visited. In a way this was nice as there were no lines or crowds to compete with anywhere. But the downside is that a lot of vendors at the main sites are struggling a lot.
