Walking holiday in the Baltics and Finland
Description of Walking holiday in the Baltics and Finland
For walkers wanting an uncrowded experience, full of natural beauty and interesting culture, this Baltics and Finland walking holiday is bound to be of interest. Beginning in the charming Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, with its well-preserved medieval Old Town, the trip continues north via a series of easy-going walks though Latvia and Estonia to the Finnish capital, Helsinki, across the Baltic Sea.
This is a fully escorted small group tour, ideal for solos but also perfectly suitable for couples and friends who would prefer a sociable atmosphere. All of the logistics, from accommodation to minivan transfers between destinations, to activities along the way, are organised for you, so that you can relax. And the activities, ranging from wine and cheese tasting just outside Riga, to a fascinating tour of an underground Soviet missile base, are well-chosen to give you a good understanding of the region’s history and culture.
First and foremost this is a walking tour, however, and most days will see you embark either on a guided city walk, or a day walk in a setting such as Estonia’s wild and wonderful Saaremaa Island, where birdlife flourishes. This trip is rated as easy, so expect flat terrain, and distances no further than 8km. If you’re reasonably fit and a regular walker, you should have no issues.
Outside of the capitals, this walking holiday explores areas that don’t see a great deal of tourism compared to other parts of Europe. By using local guides and aiming to use locally owned hotels and restaurants as far as possible, your trip aims to create as much economic benefit for these communities as possible while also giving you a deep introduction to the region’s culture.
