Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We ensure that all of our ground handlers and suppliers have an ethical and sustainable approach to tourism in all of the countries we use.
To build the first lodge, the local community in Maun were encouraged to collect cans, with a fee paid for every can, which were recycled to form the backbone of the camp’s structures.

A commitment to conservation and responsible tourism has been an integral part of the construction of our properties and our daily operations.

This particular company continues to build long lasting relationships with the rural communities in the areas in which we operate through identifying and supporting long-term, viable and self-sustaining projects. Our aim is to ensure that all projects are supported by both our staff and visitors. We work closely with the communities to identify their needs in order to improve their general well-being through empowerment, improved infrastructure, skill development and the overall enhancement of health, education and lifestyle for the future. Recently we also introduced filtered water supply and recyclable water bottles in all of our camps reducing purchased water by approximately 65%.

Supporting the non-profit charity Living With Elephants, you are invited to explore Africa from an elephant’s perspective. Meet and interact with Jabu, Thembi and Morula, a trio of semi-habituated orphaned elephants, while walking in their gigantic and silent footsteps. This is a truly uplifting experience that leaves a lasting impression on all who share their time with the elephants.

The Caracal Biodiversity Centre situated in the Chobe area is involved in educational programmes for local children, the rehabilitation of injured animals and birds and support of the local community.

People

The goal is simple - to identify and sponsor long-term, viable and self-sustaining projects that will have the support of our staff and visitors. The projects listed on these pages are all collaborative. We work closely with the local communities to determine their needs and improve their wellbeing.
Every year, Living with Elephants offers children from neighbouring villages the opportunity to interact with the elephant trio. Immersed in the world of the African elephant for two days, ten children at a time (aged between 9 and 12 years), along with two adult chaperones, participate in active educational games and share in discussions, art and music. They learn about the natural history, ecology and behaviour of the African elephant, their complex interaction with people, and explore actions that encourage a more positive relationship between elephants and humans. Sanctuary is proud to sponsor Living with Elephants' invaluable work to improve the human-elephant interface... one child at a time.
Plants and People Africa is a botanical research and community outreach project supported by SRP. Sanctuary Chief's Camp built a research facility and home for Roger and Alison Heath in 2007 so that they could continue their botanical work and concentrate on plants of the Okavango Delta. Through extensive research, sample collections and local interviews on traditional uses they wrote the acclaimed book, "Field Guide to the Plants of Northern Botswana and the Okavango Delta". They also pressed, dried, recorded, photographed and sent their specimens to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew in the United Kingdom.

Travel for Impact – Responsible Travel
By booking this itinerary USD$1 is contributed for every night of travel per person on the booking. The contribution goes to Travel for Impact (TFI) and ensures that your safari has a meaningful impact on the people who live locally.
TFI believes in changing lives through travel and provides the link between donors and beneficiaries. They assess NGO's (Non-Government Organisations) at various levels, including their effectiveness and financial integrity. They provide a mentorship for the organisations in being sustainable and ultimately to grow the impact and reach of each organisation.
