Description of Finland winter holiday, tour skating

Much more fun than winter sun, this family holiday in Finland is packed with exciting activities that you, and your kids, will absolutely love. Available in February and March, the trip takes place in a resort on Lake Saimaa, where winter sports are in abundance. In fact, this is renowned as the best place in Finland for ice skating, but there is a host of other things you can try here too, from snowshoeing to kick sledging.

Your first full day sees you journey out across the frozen lake to the island of Kaarnetsaari. How you get there is entirely up to you: sledging, skating, horsedrawn sleigh perhaps? Along the way you’ll pause for a delicious lunch of hot soup, and even try some ice fishing with your guide.

The following day you’ll visit the magnificent Linnansaari National Park, again travelling either by ice skates or sleigh, stopping off to make tasty pancakes and coffee by an open fire.

Finally, day three involves a fun snowmobile safari, with mini vehicles specially for the kids. You’ll travel out to a reindeer park, where you can help feeding the animals.

There is a spa at Lake Saimaa where you can relax and warm up in the evenings, perhaps booking some treatments or even a yoga class, and of course all the equipment and instruction you need is included.

Staying in a hillside villa, this trip makes for a memorable half term getaway for families that prefer adventures to lazing on the beach or by the pool. Meeting reindeer, skating across a frozen lake, snowmobiling and horse-drawn sleigh rides – the stories you’ll have to tell when you get back...

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Tour skating is sports, which uses your own muscles as a motor. Our other alternatives for moving around are physical as well: kick-sledging, skiing or snowshoeing. No snow mobiles are used unless there are groups, who cannot otherwise get to the National Park. As the winters are shorter and shorter, also the time for tour skating on natural ice is very limited. Typically tour skating is possible latest from the beginning of February to mid-March.

The tour skating route goes straight through the Linnansaari National Park, which is a 38 km2 big National Park consisting of hundreds of islands. This area is the home of ringed seals, which are endangered. Therefore the route has been created and is maintained in close co-operation with Metsähallitus Parks and Wildlife Finland. The life of seals is not disturbed.

The holiday resort is recycling all possible and control the usage of electricity very carefully.

Public transportation is used for transportation from Helsinki to the lake district in order to keep both the costs and the carbon footprint as low as possible.

People

Lake district is located far out from the big industrial cities. Traditionally the local population has got their living from farming, fishing and forestry. Tourism creates working places especially during the high season in summer. This product is created by the local entrepreneurs to attract visitors also in winter. They have promised to ensure availability of services now even for individual passengers by offering a pick-up service.

The holiday resort is privately owned, the same family has owned a guesthouse since 1658. The present owner is an entrepreneur in 10th. generation. This local company is taking 100% care of the tour skating route, accommodation, catering and guiding. Food served is produced locally and a lot of wild food such as berries, mushrooms and local fish are used as ingredients.

We promise to tell people like you about this unique way of enjoying sunny and crispy winter days in the lake district of Finland and make it as easy as possible for you to get there. Our company is located in Helsinki and happy to add in the package also a stop-over in the white capital of the north.
