Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
Although the water in Greece is safe to drink for our customers, we offer customers the opportunity to purchase a water filter bottle, at a discounted price, which combines three different technologies to remove over 99.9% of all microbiological contaminants in water. This prevents the need for single use plastic bottles. We operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy on our activity days to help maintain the land for future generations. Our tour leaders are trained to promote this message to our customers whilst on this trip. Lunches can be purchased from local markets and general stores, and you are encouraged to bring a Tupperware container and cutlery to avoid using plastic bags and utensils.
While the focus of this trip is primarily walking, we do sometimes need to use transport to reach the trailheads. Where we can, we use public buses, to lower our impact and while on walks we insist on sticking to the trails to avoid upsetting the delicate balance for plants and animals, as well as not feeding wildlife as they become reliant on tourists, plus maintaining a safe and respectful distance from wildlife.
We are committed to offering low impact holidays that benefit the country and communities we visit. Given most of the time is spent exploring on foot, it is important that our staff, local partners and customers are aware of the delicate balance which exists in the places we visit and leave no trace. This tour operates during low tourist season, away from the main resorts, and sourcing Greek owned hotel, local restaurants, and guides.
People
This tour operates during the quieter season in Greece and in areas typically away from the main tourist centres. It helps to extend the season on the islands, which brings in further income for the locals. We work with a volunteer organisation on Andros, whose aim is to keep paths clear for walkers as well as encourage visitors to explore more of the island than just the main ports and larger towns. One of their volunteer guides walks with us on one day, provides a picnic lunch of local produce, and arranges for us to have dinner at less well known tavernas, to ensure more locals benefit from tourism.
On this tour, all hotels we stay in are family owned, characterful properties who, during the off-season months, struggle to fill rooms, which we can help with. In addition, we eat at different tavernas each night, ensuring locally sourced produce and making sure the local community benefits from us visiting the islands.
