Description of Finland hiking holiday

Discover the wild beauty, rich history, and unique culture of Eastern Finland on this guided 8-day hiking journey. Easy to moderate hikes take you from the sandy shores of Lake Oulujärvi to the peaceful forests and lakes of Hossa National Park and Kylmäluoma Hiking Area. The tour combines two very different settings. In Kajaani, a typical Finnish small town, you can experience local life and stay in a centrally located hotel. The peaceful townscape comes alive in summer with a variety of events. At Kylmäluoma, the atmosphere changes completely: you’ll stay in cosy log cabins surrounded by
forests and lakes, with nature and tranquillity right outside your door.Along the way, you will meet reindeer, visit prehistoric rock paintings, enjoy traditional picnic lunches around open fires, and relax in authentic Finnish saunas. Away from the crowds, this tour offers a wonderful
introduction to Finland’s pure nature, fascinating heritage, and outdoor way of life.

CARBON REDUCTION
The joining point of the trip is Kajaani, which can be reached by train from Helsinki. The hotel is conveniently located within a short walking distance of the railway station.

At the end of the tour, the drop-off is at Kuusamo. Guests can continue their journey by public transport from Kuusamo bus station to Oulu and then by train to Helsinki, providing an alternative to flying.
Transfers between Kajaani, Kylmäluoma and the hiking destinations are made by shared buses.

Human-powered transport is a central part of the holiday. Guests hike on several days of the tour, and no motorised activities are included.
Vegetarian meals are available throughout the tour on prior request. Locally sourced food is preferred where available, and seasonal vegetables are favoured. Tap water in Finland is safe and of high quality, and we encourage customers to refill reusable water bottles rather than buy bottled water.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Both accommodation providers on the tour are committed to reducing their environmental impacts through everyday practices such as energy saving, responsible water use, waste reduction and waste sorting. Our hotel partner has both the Green Key ecolabel and the Sustainable Travel Finland label.

The tour includes visits to Hossa National Park and the Kylmäluoma Hiking Area. Hiking on marked trails helps concentrate visitor use and reduce disturbance to the surrounding environment. Guests are encouraged to respect nature, stay on designated trails and take all waste back to the accommodation for sorting.

We have prepared sustainability tips for our customers, including advice for preparing for the tour and reducing their environmental impact during the holiday. The sustainability tips are available on our website and are also included in the pre-tour materials.

The tour includes an encounter with reindeer at a local reindeer farm. The visit focuses on learning about the animals and their role in northern Finnish life and culture. No reindeer rides are included.

LOCAL ECONOMY
We aim to ensure that tourism income benefits local businesses and communities. We use local guides whenever possible and work with small, locally owned businesses and family-run providers.

One of the accommodation providers on this tour is family-owned. International groups are an important additional source of business for this company, particularly outside the busiest domestic holiday periods.

The tour also includes visits to small, locally owned businesses and attractions, such as a local reindeer farm. By including these visits in our programmes, we help direct tourism spending to local businesses and provide our guests with opportunities to learn about local life and livelihoods.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
We comply with Finnish employment legislation and applicable collective labour agreements. We aim to use local people whenever possible, particularly as guides and service providers, creating employment and income opportunities within the local community.

Age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality or other personal characteristics do not affect our decisions when recruiting guides or other staff. Our responsible tourism policy prohibits all forms of discrimination and promotes equal treatment and opportunities in employment.

Our employees and guides are paid in accordance with Finnish legislation and applicable collective labour agreements. We expect our operating partners and service providers to comply with the same legal requirements.
