Description of Azores surfing holiday
Sao Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, is a thrilling base for this Azores surfing holiday. Set in the open Atlantic, it offers consistent swell, uncrowded breaks and dramatically green backdrops that make every session memorable. This week combines five days of surf with the flexibility to explore the island beyond the waves, creating a holiday that suits active travellers who want more than just time in the water. Whether you’re building confidence as a beginner or refining technique with experienced instructors, conditions here allow progression without pressure.
Surf sessions are balanced with plenty of space to explore the island. On non surfing time you can choose from activities such as canyoning, coasteering and hiking volcanic ridgelines. You can kayak along the coast or head out into deeper waters for whale watching. Ribeira Grande, the island’s informal surf capital, is a chilled spot with easy access to beaches, cafes and coastal paths. The tailor made itinerary is nice and flexible: some days are about energy and movement, others about recovery, good food and absorbing the island’s distinctive rhythms.
One of the highlights away from the ocean is a visit inland to Furnas, with its striking volcanic landscapes. Walking around the lagoon, seeing fumaroles bubbling from the ground and soaking in thermal waters offers a contrast to time spent in the chilly sea. It’s these shifts – from salt water to geothermal pools, from cliffs and coastlines to lush interior valleys – that give the week its depth. Surfing may be the focus, but Sao Miguel rewards curiosity, making this as much an island adventure as a sporting break.
All activities are run by local guides who know the coastline, weather patterns and terrain well, keeping experiences safe and well timed. Accommodation is in locally run hotels and group sizes are kept small to maintain a relaxed, sociable atmosphere. Subtle choices around low impact activities sit quietly in the background, ensuring your trip’s impact on the natural environment is kept as low as possible. The result is a surfing holiday that’s ideal for travellers who like their adventures varied and their destinations characterful.
