CARBON REDUCTIONThis Active Albania Adventure places significant emphasis on reducing operational carbon emissions by prioritizing human-powered activities and responsible local transport. Throughout the itinerary, travelers spend five days engaged in low-carbon adventures such as hiking (Mount Tomor, Pëllumbas Cave), kayaking, rafting on the Vjosa River, and snorkeling on the Karaburun Peninsula. These activities both immerse guests in nature and eliminate the need for motorized internal transfers on activity days. Shared minivans and occasional boats are used for group transfers, significantly reducing per-person CO2 compared to individual car travel. Within rural areas and towns, much exploration is done on foot, which further minimizes carbon impact. Accommodations are often guesthouses or eco-minded rural farmhouses, many of which are locally owned and focus on seasonal produce, supporting reduced food miles and avoiding imported products. Plant-based and vegetarian meal options are available daily, and travelers are actively encouraged to minimize food waste and know their carbon impacts through pre-trip informational resources. The trip avoids all internal flights entirely, focusing on sustainable overland routes, and advises guests on eco-friendly travel tips prior to departure.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The trip visits an impressive range of nationally significant parks and protected areas, including Tomori National Park, Karaburun & Sazan National Marine Park, Lake Prespa, Drilon National Park, and the Vjosa River—Europe’s last free-flowing river. Entry fees to these parks and the use of local guides directly contribute to the preservation of these landscapes and their rich biodiversity. At Karavasta Lagoon, guests participate in birdwatching, supporting awareness of wetlands vital to migratory species. The Vjosa River rafting experience is organized in alignment with local conservation guidelines, ensuring minimal disturbance to wildlife and riverbanks; guides communicate the importance of river conservation, and responsible behavior is at the core of each nature-based activity. Overnight farmhouses and village stays frequently maintain pollinator gardens, rely on rainwater harvesting, and minimize single-use plastics. In Lin village, guests are introduced to traditional and modern efforts for lake biodiversity preservation, and information is supplied to travelers on avoiding the introduction or spread of invasive species. The itinerary’s design not only leaves no trace but actively supports local environmental improvements, whether through entrance fees, local employment, or nature restoration awareness.

LOCAL ECONOMYSupporting the local economy is central to this itinerary. All accommodations throughout the trip are locally-owned, ranging from boutique city hotels in Tirana and Berat to family-run guesthouses and farmhouses in Këlcyrë and Lin. Stays at these establishments ensure that revenue remains within the community and supports sustainable livelihoods. The itinerary features lunches and dinners at traditional restaurants and with local families, highlighting local produce and fostering direct economic benefit to residents. Local guides are employed throughout, offering insight into Albanian culture and natural history, and additional activities, such as wine tasting in family vineyards or cooking classes in a village home, further boost small rural enterprises. Visits to craft markets, family-run wineries, and agrotourism businesses are included to maximize direct positive impacts and preserve regional cultural traditions.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
The trip is designed and operated in partnership with Albanian in-destination experts, with over 90% of staff and guides being locally based and drawn from the surrounding communities. Involvement of women is prioritized in various roles, from guesthouse management to artisan food experiences and cooking classes. Fair wages are ensured, meeting or surpassing Albania’s minimum wage requirements. The trip welcomes travelers of all backgrounds and aims to foster inclusivity—LGBTQ+ travelers and those from diverse backgrounds will find a welcoming atmosphere across accommodations and activities. In addition, village visits and engagement with cooperative projects support marginalized groups, providing alternative income for rural women, fishers, and craftspeople. Efforts are made to ensure activities are accessible for a wide range of physical abilities, and clear pre-trip information is provided regarding any mobility challenges. Baboo Travel and its partners are committed to diversity, non-discrimination, and creating opportunities for connection, learning, and respect between travelers and hosts.
