Description of Okavango Delta adventure holiday, Botswana

Explore the variety that the Okavango Delta has to offer on this nine-night itinerary including seven nights in the Delta experiencing both 'dry' and 'wet' areas.

Our suggested itinerary starts in Maun with a flight to Nokanyana Camp, which is nestled in the bush at the confluence of the Khwai and Mababe Rivers, overlooking a large floodplain regularly frequented by Africa’s wildlife. Nokanyana is in a world renowned game rich area where you could watch elephants, hippo and antelopes from your room and on a game drive you could see any number of predators, including wild dogs and, it is claimed, the world’s largest herd of buffalo.

After an initial three nights on safari we suggest two nights at an adventure camp, which is more of a luxury glamping experience. You aren't too far away from Nokanyana so you don't waste the day travelling, but far away enough for it to feel different.

The final stop in Botswana on the western side of the Okavango Delta in a much wetter region and from Mopiri Camp you will largely explore the waterways by boat, mokoro and on foot.

The trip ends in Victoria Falls with two nights in the suburbs of the town to explore this bustling town and the famous waterfall.

Everything we do is completely tailor-made so this itinerary is not set in stone. Should you like to make any amendments, reverse the itinerary or change accommodations we can discuss this during the quoting process.

The lodges employed local people, supported local villages and were helping to support conservation. Everything worked like clock work and the wildlife was great. Read full review

Seeing “zoo” animals in a wild state, making their own daily decisions. Bring school supplies to the most remote camps; they all have schools in he nearby village that they support. I was told to bring modest quantities, but I wish I had brought more. Read full review

CARBON REDUCTION

This itinerary includes a road transfer between Nokanyana and Ngonti Adventure Camp in order to reduce the amount of flights involved in carrying out this trip.

At every accommodation in this itinerary there are options for human powered activities, this includes waking safaris and mokoro trips at the safari camps and a host of activities available in Victoria Falls that do not require vehicles.

The camps Nokanyana, Ngonti and Mopiri which make up seven nights of this nine night trip are all powered by solar.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

In 2017 a permanent scientific research base at Mopiri Camp was established, which is currently being used by the “National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project” (NGOWP), a broad-based conservation and landscape project undertaking research and development in Botswana, Namibia and Angola. The project aims to preserve the pristine state of the Okavango River Basin to protect key wildlife populations, help local communities thrive and support sustainable development and use of natural resources.

All three safari camps in this itinerary have local, expert guides and by their presence of traversing these wilderness areas everyday it reduces the likelihood of poaching and hunting for bushmeat. Particularly, the second camp Ngonti which is in an area previously without any camps.

LOCAL ECONOMY

As well as employing local guides it is possible for guests to visit a local village from both Nokanyana and Mopiri Camp. This activity will be led by a local guide and as the village does not have many visitors it does not feel too touristy and there are opportunities for guests to meet local crafts people and if they should wish purchase local crafts.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The operators behind Nokanyana, Ngonti and Mopiri are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travellers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination.

Pack for a purpose is a charitable organisation that was set up in 2009 and offers travellers the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the local communities of their travel destination. It is a global initiative that helps contribute essential supplies in over 60 countries. Pack for a purpose supports various initiatives such as education, child welfare, animal welfare and socioeconomic development.

All travellers can participate and it is as simple as choosing supplies you wish to take with you from a list of specific items requested for the area and project. The supplies you bring are then left with us and we make sure to deliver them on to the project. The items can vary from pencils, deflated soccer balls, pet supplies, through to stethoscopes and band-aids. It is a way for travellers to make a huge impact with very little effort.
