Inner Hebrides Scottish sailing holiday
Description of Inner Hebrides Scottish sailing holiday
Sail through one of Europe's last great wildernesses on this week-long voyage from Oban to Largs, threading the Inner Hebrides aboard Déjà Vue, our Bavaria 46 expedition yacht.
You'll set off from Oban, gateway to the Highlands and islands, and sail west into genuinely remote water. Mull and Iona come first — Iona in particular holds a rare stillness, home to one of the oldest Christian sites in Britain and a community of fewer than two hundred people who have kept island life going for centuries. From there, Staffa rises out of the sea, its extraordinary basalt columns forming Fingal's Cave, a place that inspired Mendelssohn and has drawn travellers for over two hundred years — accessible only by boat, and best appreciated slowly, under sail, rather than on a fast tourist launch.
Continuing south, you'll reach Colonsay and Islay, islands where small-scale farming, fishing and whisky distilling still shape daily life, before arriving at one of the trip's genuine highlights: an overnight anchorage in Loch Tarbert on the wild, uninhabited west coast of Jura. Jura is home to more red deer than people, and a night at anchor here, away from any settlement or light pollution, is as close to true wilderness as sailing in the UK gets. From Jura, the route brings you home through the Sound of Jura and Kilbrannan Sound, past the Isle of Arran, into Largs.
Throughout the week, you'll be genuine working crew under the guidance of skipper Fred Conradie, a Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor who has spent many years running RYA Training Centres. With a maximum of six guests aboard, everyone gets real time on the helm, trimming sails and planning passages — no prior sailing experience is required, and the pace adapts to the group.
This is low-impact travel by nature: a sailing yacht draws almost nothing from the places it visits, and every stop supports small island communities and businesses that depend on visitors arriving thoughtfully, in small numbers, rather than en masse. You'll eat and shop locally where the itinerary allows, and the wildlife along this route — golden eagles, otters, dolphins, and the deer of Jura — is often best seen precisely because so few people travel this way by yacht.

Responsible Travel
Planet
Planet: Sailing SustainablyWe're passionate about exploring the ocean in the most sustainable way possible. That means taking real, measurable action to reduce our carbon footprint and protect the marine environments we sail through.
Carbon Reduction: Measured & Managed
In 2023, we developed a custom tool to measure the CO2 footprint of every trip we run—becoming the first sailing operator in the world to do so. This tool helps us—and now others in the sailing community—understand where emissions come from and where we can make the biggest improvements.
We’re actively addressing this by:
Trialling biofuels as a cleaner alternative to diesel
Sourcing Locally, Supporting Communities
We source food locally wherever possible, supporting island-based producers and reducing transport emissions. It’s better for the planet—and the plate.
Protecting Environment & Wildlife
We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact by over 90% within the next 18 months.
Ongoing monitoring of carbon emissions across the full yacht lifecycle—from build to voyages
Award-Winning Sustainability
In 2024, we were honoured to receive the LuxLife Marine Tourism Award for:
“Global Sustainability Champion 2024”
We’re proud to be leading the way in sustainable adventure sailing—and even prouder to share the journey with conscious travellers like you.
People
Supporting the Local EconomyWe believe that sustainable travel also means supporting the people and communities we visit. Throughout our Scotland adventures, many of the destinations are small, remote island communities — Iona, Colonsay, Islay and Jura among them. We make a conscious effort to buy locally and encourage our crew and guests to spend time ashore, helping local businesses, distilleries and harbours thrive while ensuring our guests enjoy authentic, enriching experiences.
Employment, Inclusivity & Diversity
A key part of our mission is to make sailing more accessible — to open the ocean to people who may not otherwise have the means or confidence to step aboard. That's why we launched Open Oceans, our award-winning inclusivity programme, in 2023. This initiative offers fully funded places on our adventures to individuals from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds. Fittingly, our very first Open Oceans recipient joined a Scottish sailing adventure in 2023. By removing barriers to participation, we're helping to grow a more diverse, inclusive, and connected sailing community.
