We’re dedicated to responsible travel, which is why we developed the first-ever carbon scoring system of its kind. This innovative tool lets us accurately measure the environmental impact of every bespoke trip we create. By working closely with our suppliers through a detailed carbon-scoring survey, we gather important insights into what’s effective and where we can improve.

Where possible, we try to use alternative modes of transport to flying; this 17-day itinerary was designed with sustainability in mind, particularly through its emphasis on rail travel. Japan's extensive and efficient train network, including the renowned Shinkansen (JJapan's bullet trains), offers a low-carbon alternative to air travel, aligning with eco-conscious travel practices.

The primary sustainable aspect of this trip is its focus on train travel. This mode of transportation not only reduces carbon emissions but also allows travellers to experience Japan's scenic landscapes in an environmentally friendly manner.

Local and regional food is available throughout, including vegetarian.

For those interested in further enhancing the sustainability of their travel, this itinerary provides options to stay in eco-friendly accommodations and supports carbon offsetting initiatives. These efforts contribute to a more sustainable travel experience, complementing the environmentally friendly aspects of train travel.

Local Economy:

We support the local economy by using local guides (for example in Takayama, where you will have a guided walking tour). You will also have the opportunity to support family-owned businesses when visiting the morning markets, where you can buy regional crafts and fresh produce.

Employment, inclusivity, and diversity:

Takayama’s Gifu Prefecture is renowned for its culinary offerings, including Hida beef and traditional sake. By exploring local markets and dining establishments, you contribute to the livelihoods of farmers, brewers, and restauranteurs, supporting the region's agricultural and hospitality sectors.

By utilising local guides, we contribute towards employment through eco-tourism; examples include the Old Tokaido Trail, a cruise across Lake Ashi, and a private tour of Kanazawa.

You will also be supporting and learning about two culturally significant and important aspects of Japanese history; the Nagamachi Samurai District, and the beautifully preserved teahouses of the Higaschichaya District, where you can learn more about geishas.
