Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Niru Village is celebrated as a model of ecological harmony, and our tour is designed to uphold this legacy. We trek through the core of the Three Parallel Rivers UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to endangered species like the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey.Strict Wilderness Ethics: During our camping trek to Nanbao Pasture, we strictly enforce a "Leave No Trace" policy. Our team carries out all non-biodegradable waste to be disposed of properly in town. We also respect specific local ecological taboos, such as the prohibition of meat consumption near the sacred Seven-Color Waterfall, which helps protect the site from pollution and honors local spiritual beliefs.
Low-Carbon Logistics: To reduce our environmental footprint, we utilize high-speed trains for the travel between Kunming and Lijiang, avoiding carbon-intensive flights or long drives. Furthermore, within the village and on the trail, our logistics rely on traditional horsepower—local packhorses transport our gear, a zero-emission transport method that has been used in these mountains for centuries.
People
This itinerary focuses on the remote community of Niru, ensuring that tourism becomes a tool for sustaining their unique way of life rather than disrupting it.Direct Community Benefit: We partner directly with Niru’s 108 households. By staying in locally-owned family guesthouses and hiring local villagers as guides and horsemen, we inject income directly into the community. This economic support encourages young people to stay in the village and continue their traditions, rather than migrating to cities for work.
Preserving Living Heritage: Niru preserves a vanishing Tibetan lifestyle that is rare even in Shangri-La. Our small-group approach allows for genuine, respectful interaction. We encourage guests to engage in cultural exchange, such as learning about the rotational grazing systems that have protected these meadows for generations. We also visit sites like Baishuitai to learn about the Naxi Dongba culture from its source, supporting the transmission of this unique pictographic heritage. By valuing these traditions, we help empower the community to keep them alive.
