Norway by train winter holiday
Description of Norway by train winter holiday
Embark on a wintery journey through Norway that links several of the country’s most characterful cities by rail, allowing you to experience snow-covered landscapes in a relaxed and low impact way. Beginning in Oslo, there is time to explore the capital's evolving waterfront, museums and surrounding hills, where a short metro ride takes you directly to ski slopes and wide views across the city and fjord.
Travelling north, the train skirts Norway’s largest lake en route to Lillehammer, where a slower pace and small-town atmosphere define your stay. Formerly host of the Winter Olympics, the town offers a mix of cultural sites and outdoor pursuits, from panoramic viewpoints at the ski jump to museums that trace Norwegian history. Continuing across the high plateau of Dovrefjell, the journey to Trondheim brings changing scenery and a sense of distance from the capital.
In Trondheim, a guided walk introduces the city’s historic centre before you continue on to Roros, a UNESCO-listed mining town known for its preserved wooden buildings and wintry atmosphere. Here, the highlight is a dog sledding experience through forests and open terrain, an engaging way to explore the landscape while learning to work with the dogs and guides.
Time in Roros also allows for independent exploration, whether browsing small shops, enjoying the hotel spa or, if conditions are right, watching for the Northern Lights. Travel throughout is primarily by train, much of it powered by renewable energy, and you will stay throughout in smaller, locally owned accommodation. That ensures that your Norway by train winter holiday supports regional communities while keeping your environmental footprint relatively low.

CARBON REDUCTIONAll transportation throughout the itinerary is made by trains. Part of the railway is still operated by diesel train but majority is electric and Norways energy is to a large extent green and train make for a very environmental friendly and sustainable way of travel.
Breakfast buffets always have vegetarian and vegans options available and clearly marked. Restaurants always have vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.
The itinerary is based on only using local transport by train between the destinations, and only international flight to/from the country is necessary.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Each year we donate a precentage of the company surplus to a charity organisation who either helps people or the environment. Last year we donated to an NGO organisation cleaning plastic and litter from beaches and coast lines.
Have you considered adding an opt out conservation fee to each trip for named NGOs? No. We feel adding and opt out conservation fee is not right as it puts an extra economic burden on the traveller already paying for the trip, and we feel giving something back from the company surplus is an overall better solution.

LOCAL ECONOMYThe accommodations in Oslo and Røros are smaller-scale places with a more home feel and the hotels are locally owned. The hotel in Lillehammer is chain owned but it is a Scandinavian chain with high focus on sustainability known for their family friendly atmosphere. The hotel design is also set to fit in with the rest of the cities small town feeling.
We try to select destination that is not receiving the highest amount of travellers and has a local feel, like Lillhammer and Røros, which are also easily available with public transportation. Within the destination, we also seek to use local small-scale operators with a focus on sustainability delivering a more authentic experience and also benefiting the local economy.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Norways is a very liberal country in general with high equal rights to race, gender, sexual orientation or nationality. All travellers like for example LGBT+ travellers are welcome everywhere.
