CARBON REDUCTION

Efforts have been made to minimise the carbon footprint of this trip by focusing on low-impact, ocean-based operations. The programme is entirely based within South Ari Atoll, avoiding internal flights once participants arrive in the Maldives. All research activities take place locally, reducing the need for long-distance travel during the trip.

Transport is shared and efficient. Volunteers travel together daily on a traditional dhoni, significantly lowering emissions per person compared to individual transport. The itinerary is designed around marine access, removing the need for land-based transfers.

Human-powered activities form a key part of the experience. Swimming and snorkelling are central to the research work, allowing participants to engage directly with the environment without reliance on motorised equipment for observation.

Participants are encouraged to reduce their travel footprint by choosing lower-emission flight options and packing responsibly. Guidance is provided on minimising plastic use and reducing waste throughout the trip.

Food served on board is largely locally sourced and prepared in simple, low-waste ways. Vegetarian options are available daily, helping reduce the overall carbon impact of meals.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This trip is fundamentally designed to create a positive impact on marine biodiversity. All activities directly contribute to the conservation of whale sharks, a globally endangered species threatened by human activity.

The project supports long-term population monitoring through non-invasive research techniques such as photographic identification and environmental data collection. This data is shared with wider conservation networks and contributes to global understanding of whale shark movements and protection needs.

Strict wildlife interaction guidelines are followed at all times. Participants are trained to observe whale sharks responsibly, ensuring minimal disturbance and no physical contact.

By operating within South Ari Atoll, a recognised hotspot for whale sharks, the project supports awareness and protection of a critical marine habitat. The presence of researchers and volunteers also helps promote responsible tourism practices in the area.

Participants receive guidance on how to reduce their environmental impact, including responsible snorkelling behaviour, waste reduction and marine conservation awareness.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

This programme supports the local economy by working with locally operated vessels and crew. The dhoni and research boat are mainly staffed by Maldivian team members, ensuring income remains within the community.

Supplies, including food and equipment where possible, are sourced locally, supporting nearby island economies. The programme also promotes sustainable marine tourism, helping create long-term economic value linked to conservation rather than exploitation.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The project works closely with local staff and international conservationists, creating a collaborative and inclusive working environment. A significant proportion of the operational team, including boat crew, are Maldivian.

All staff are paid fairly in line with local standards, and the programme supports skills development through training and knowledge exchange between international volunteers and local teams.

The trip is open to a diverse range of participants from around the world, fostering cultural exchange and shared learning. It is LGBTQ+ friendly and promotes a respectful, inclusive atmosphere on board.

While the nature of the vessel-based experience and water activities requires a reasonable level of mobility and swimming ability, the team aims to be as inclusive as possible within safety constraints.
