Planet
CARBON REDUCTION:Basecamp Masai Mara's tents use solar-heated showers, cutting the hot water load that would otherwise fall on grid or generator power. In Mauritius, Heritage Le Telfair grows fruit and vegetables in its own fields on the Bel Ombre estate and sources further organic produce from the surrounding villages, shortening the supply chain for much of what's served. The resort also bottles its own water on site rather than buying in single-use plastic bottles, and treats and reuses wastewater for irrigation alongside rainwater harvesting.
Vegetarian and vegan meals are available upon request.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE:
Heritage Le Telfair runs its own Marine Education Centre on site, working with the local NGO Reef Conservation to monitor the lagoon and reef ecosystem and running a seagrass restoration project along the shoreline; guests can join educational beach walks and glass-bottom boat trips that explain what's being done and why. Game drives at Basecamp Masai Mara are led by Maasai guides from the neighbouring community, and the camp runs a tree nursery and organic vegetable garden as part of its own landscape work within the reserve.

LOCAL ECONOMY:Basecamp Masai Mara is run as a partnership between the local Maasai community and its operators, not as an outpost of an international hotel chain: it sits next to a Maasai village, runs a Maasai Women's Arts & Crafts Centre selling directly to guests, and its own gift shop is set up to support community groups and projects rather than operate as a standard hotel shop. In Mauritius, Heritage Le Telfair sources much of its produce from its own fields on the Bel Ombre estate and from the surrounding villages rather than from imported suppliers, keeping more of that spend local.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY:
Basecamp Masai Mara employs a 100% Kenyan team recruited from the local community, including through internship opportunities, and many of its staff have been there for over a decade. Heritage Le Telfair runs its own Heritage Training Academy to recruit and train people from the surrounding community into hotel roles.
