CARBON REDUCTION

This five-day itinerary includes three domestic flights: Addis Ababa to Lalibela, Lalibela to Gondar, and Gondar to Addis Ababa. It also includes road transfers and a return day trip from Gondar to the Simien Mountains in a fuel-powered vehicle. These journeys produce emissions, so we do not describe the holiday as carbon neutral or environmentally friendly.

We confirm the route, flights and vehicle arrangements before departure. The vehicle used depends on the number of travelers and the booking arrangement. Drivers are asked to avoid unnecessary engine idling and to use permitted roads and parking areas, subject to road conditions and instructions at each site.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Simien Mountains and wildlife

The standard itinerary includes a day excursion into Simien Mountains National Park and a return to Gondar that evening. We arrange the required park formalities and travel with a local guide and scout as specified in the itinerary. The walking distance depends on the group’s abilities, daylight, weather and park conditions.

We ask guests to stay on the route shown by their guide, take their litter back with them, and leave plants and other natural features in place. Geladas and birds may be seen, but wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Travellers should observe animals from a distance and must not feed or approach them for photographs.

We encourage guests to carry a reusable bottle. Safe drinking water and refill facilities vary along the route, so we confirm the drinking water provided for each departure rather than promising that disposable bottles can be avoided throughout the trip.

Optional Simien Mountains camping extension

The separate three-day Simien Mountains extension adds two nights of camping and more time on mountain trails. If a guest books this extension, we explain the camping facilities, water supply and arrangements for collecting and carrying out waste before departure. Staff and equipment are confirmed for the extended route. The five-day tour itself includes the day trip and does not include mountain camping.

Historic sites and places of worship

Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches and Gondar’s historic and religious sites require careful visits. Our guides explain entry rules, appropriate dress and photography restrictions. We ask travelers to stay within visitor areas, avoid touching paintings or fragile surfaces, and follow the instructions of church custodians and site staff.

These churches remain places of worship. Services and local religious activities take priority over sightseeing; the order or extent of a visit may change when access is restricted.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

We arrange local guides for visits in Lalibela and Gondar. The Simien Mountains day trip includes a local mountain guide and scout. Depending on the departure, the tour also purchases services from drivers, accommodation providers, restaurants and site staff.

The number of people engaged varies with the group size and activities. We do not claim that every departure creates a fixed number of jobs or directs a fixed percentage of its price to local communities.

Local businesses and respectful visits

Where suitable options are available, we seek accommodation, meals and other services from local providers. The hotels and providers for a particular trip are confirmed during booking; their ownership and facilities should be described individually rather than making a claim about every property on the tour.

At Merkato, during a coffee ceremony, and at other optional stops, our guides help travelers understand local customs. We ask guests to request permission before photographing people, worshippers, traders or ceremonies and to respect anyone who declines. Travelers who wish to buy coffee or crafts are encouraged to purchase directly from sellers or makers where possible; purchases are voluntary.

Accessibility and individual needs

The Lalibela churches include steps, narrow passages and uneven stone surfaces. Gondar’s historic sites also involve walking on uneven ground. The Simien Mountains day trip takes place at altitude and may include uneven trails and exposed viewpoints.

Please tell us about mobility, dietary, hearing, vision or other needs before booking. We can then explain each planned visit and discuss a suitable walking pace, assistance or alternative activity where available. Adjustments depend on site access, local facilities and the final schedule.

The optional camping extension requires more walking and uses basic mountain facilities. We discuss its route and physical demands separately with travelers considering that option.
