Description of Bird watching short break to Hungary

Bukk National Park in north-east Hungary is a heavily forested haven for around 90 species of nesting birds, including eight woodpecker species and four eagle species. The town of Eger in the south of the park makes a great base for bird watching holidays with an expert guide, and it’s just an hour-and-a-half transfer from Budapest.

Highlights include seeing red-backed shrike – which no longer breed in the UK – and listening out for nightingales. You can also visit Hortobagy National Park, Hungary's largest national park, to spot wetland birds on the Great Hungarian Plain.

Your expert guide is a retired wildlife crime officer who served for over 30 years with the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and has been observing birds in Hungary since 1995. A specialist in woodland birds and an expert on hawfinches, he works closely with the national park on conservation schemes.

Your home for the week is a four-star hotel in the outskirts of Eger. When you’re not out birding at the amazing local bird watching sites – some just a walk from the hotel – you can enjoy goulash and barbecue parties on the terrace, wine tastings of local Eger wines in the cellar, relaxing in the beer garden, and time in the sauna and solarium.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet and people

The bird watching hotel is locally owned and employees are local people. We employ local birding guides and work closely with the national parks and visit their wildlife exhibitions for which there is an entrance fee.

On this birding holiday, we also use locally owned restaurants and give visitors the option of visiting various charging attractions in the area.

Almost 50% of the bird watching tour cost goes in to the local community (hotel, restaurants etc.) Guests are taught some key word in Hungarian at the start of the trip.

We encourage landowners to view local wildlife & take up European grant aid, available for sensitive land management schemes where specific wildlife occur. All walks respect landowners and wildlife conservation. We work closely with the Bukk national Park and private forestry companies to ensure habitat protection for the White Backed Woodpecker and in the past 5 years we have seen a population increase. Recycling and composting are both carried out by the bird watching hotel. Heating is turned off when office is not being used & we take great care not to waste water. We use public transport & car share.
