Unlike many of the nearby self catering apartments, we avoid the over packaged “hospitality pack” with single use plastic sachets and capsules. Instead, we try our best to minimise plastic waste by refilling containers from bulk supplies wherever possible (detergent, washing powder, tea, coffee. sugar etc).

We ensure all guests are fully briefed on rubbish separation and recycling on arrival.

Sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases and all towels are taken back to our farmhouse where we can wash them our harvested rainwater. This also has the advantage of keeping the towels softer!). The washing machine is also powered from our solar panels.

We are keen lovers of fauna and flora and active supporters of the local Bearded Vulture conservation foundation. Last year we collected over 1000€ in donations from our clients.

In high season, we encourage our guests to make use of the nearby park shuttle bus and enjoy the many walks that can be done straight from the house, thus minimising car use.

People

When we send instructions for arriving at the the cottage, we also point out it is more convenient as well as more beneficial to our community to shop locally. In fact, guests at Casa Petirrojo are rewarded with a discount when they shop at the local butchers, bakers and small Torla supermarket (instead of stocking up at the hypermarkets in the big towns).

We are members of the Sobrarbe Pyrenees Geopark network. So as well promoting and explaining the amazing geological heritage of the area, we also promote the use of artisan food products made within the Geopark such as honey, cheese, jams etc.

We always recommend local mountain guides and are happy to book tables for our guests to eat out at our favorite local restaurants. We also arrange for the Torla taxi drivers, some of which speak English, to meet any guests arriving on public transport.

We support our local artisan producers, and especially recommend a visit to the local goat farm to sample and buy their amazing cheese (they might just let you cuddle the baby goats!).
